CHARLIE RESIGNED!!!

I am quite surprised by all the Warren hate as well. I did not find him too bad (except the WWTT). Better to have Cox out instead of him anyways.

For those doubting James Morrison, he did a Top Gear-esk pilot in Australia in the early 90s. He was very strong in that, I have all the hope that he'll be good in this one.

On the topic of Charlie though, I'm not surprised. I wanted to like him, but he just got on my nerves. Now hopefully they all get the idea that Top Gear is about petrol head stories and cars, not just a bunch of 3 guys not being terribly funny. TGUK's best moments come from the 3's complete genuine moments cocking about with cars.

EDIT: "Behind the wheel" circa 1994. I did a bit more reading, apparently it got picked up for 18 eps and had 2.1 million viewers. When I originally read about it, they didn't mention that!

It is a bit of a kick in the nuts for the 4,327 unsuccessful applicants from the original casting call

I do remember one of them....the pizza company owner with the WRX's used to deliver the pizzas.

*edit

I watched his video again, and realized that I take my opinion back. He is on the annoying side. Very very annoying.

I like him. As much as I tried with Charlie, and he was growing on me a little by the end of the series, I have to admit as soon as I started watching that vid, I found myself thinking, "that's more like it". I look forward to seeing how he works out :)

Brilliant!!

I liked Charlie in the first couple of episodes - basically until Steve & Warren improved, then he was the weak link. Warren, IMO, was the most natural of the 3 over the entire season (which I forced myself to watch simply because it's Top Gear!), but Steve did improve enough to drop Charlie down to #3.

JM should be a good replacement - roll on the new series!

something about warren just annoys the piss out of me...Charlie seems so laid back that hes cool. Warren seems so up tight...and...idk aybe his accent just seems wierd to those of us in America??
I thought Cox was the best one.

I wanted to like Charlie since he was supposed to be "Jezza" on the show, and towards the last couple episodes it was getting to me... but he was just too annoying.

And James Morrison is "About right!" :) I'm really glad Cox is getting replaced actually.. oh cock.. you're gone Cox! :D

Glad to hear Cox is gone. I don't think it will solve all their problems, but for me he was the biggest problem.

James Morrison though? Seriously?
So we'll have a short, fat, bald man with a whiny high pitched voice who likes to blow his own horn (literally). A short, skinny, "fully-sick" dude with a whiny voice who can't stop saying "Grouse" all the friggin' time (but at least he can drive). And Warren.

Ah well, fingers crossed :p

Yeah. This new host combination is sure to drive the ladies in the audience wild. Not!

Once again it would seem the selectors of on-screen talent for Top Gear Australia are trying to demonstrate that they've have had a 'full-scale cool-bypass' at some point in their lives... or simply don't recognise that any number of successful ensembles in pop culture history have had a broad mix of characters that range between the quirky and cool.

Remember the Beatles, or the Monkees for example? And Top Gear UK, of course :?

Yeah. This new host combination is sure to drive the ladies in the audience wild. Not!

Bolly, I fear you're going to find this all very disturbing so I'll give you a moment to sit down and take a deep breath...

Ready? ;)

I know ladies who find Steve and Warren very attractive (though not necessarily simultaneously). And perhaps surprisingly, it's Warren that seems to get the laydeez going most! Maybe it's the facial hair, or maybe it's the uke... personally I think it might be something to do with the antique fire engines

Oddly though, I can't think of anyone with a 'thing' for poor old Charlie.

Oh... I am disturbed. Very disturbed. Maybe I can write your revelation off as a British thing? Somebody on an earlier post said all the women at his work found Warren's facial hair a bit 'Dirty Sanchez.' And please don't ask anybody you don't know well what that is, if you don't already know. It's not fit for the kiddies ;)

Seriously though, I like Warren and Steve and James Morrison. But not all together. They're just all a bit too squeaky and excitable and as a threesome that will be very tiresome! It'll be like having a car show entirely hosted by Gnomes, Dwarves and Teletubbies.

Hopefully the lack of variety and light/shade in the natural personas of the series two hosting combo won't turn the show into the motoring equivalent of a dwarf-throwing contest too. Top Gear isn't all about humour. The UK show also celebrates beauty, aesthetics, pure performance, extraordinary design, etc, etc. It would have been nice to see at least one person on the hosting team whose voice can naturally drop down to a pitch which can impart some natural gravitas in those sort of "Wow!" stories.... that have been so clearly missing from TGA to date.

Edit: I've just watched James Morrison hosting 'Behind the Wheel' and to be honest, I'm more worried than ever. He's obviously a nice guy, but Top Gear Australia doesn't need a nice guy. It would be far more interesting to see a quick-witted quirky smart guy who's not like everybody else on Australia's boring and endless parade of lifestyle TV shows. It would be even better if they could write their own lines too. But no doubt SBS decided that because Morrison is already well known, he'll bring in the viewers. I'm not so sure. As I've argued before, the fact all three TGUK presenters can write and ad-lib so well is why they come across with authenticity. They're not just putting on their characters. It's who they genuinely are.

Morrison's voice and delivery also seems like a bit of a weak point. TGA is now going to have three people with voices up at the altitude of the Concorde. Oh. That's right. The Concorde crashed and was taken out of service too.

THANK THE LORD!

I've disliked Charlie's hosting style and qualities since episode one and have complained about it pretty much the whole way through. I'm glad Charlie made the choice to resign. I'm sure it would have been tough for him but it would have been better for his profile, and for the shows future.

He was too over the top. He tried far too hard on a program he should have just been more casual in style and demeanor. The horrible script he was handed didn't help his cause.

James would be a better person to replace Charlie. But not as a host. I would prefer see Wazza host it.

Its early days still. I don't know what I'd like. I guess its trial and error time. Hopefully they got it right with James....

It only took the first 45 seconds of the James video for me to think 'Yep this could be a good thing'. It will make me more interested in watching season 2 anyway. As for Warren while I think he has great hosting potential and quiet like his style I have a problem with the facial hair, for some reason I think 80's porn star every time I see him or Chopper Reid(sp?). And can't understand how anyone could think of Steve as the eye candy. Anyway bring on season 2 now - well at least episode one :p
Cheers
JLM

If anything, I think it will change the dynamics of the show so the hosts don't seem so CC'd

It's really strange to read folks saying "Hey - I didn't mind Charlie that much"...maybe you should've contributed that thought when everyone else was bagging him during the series. I'd be very surprised if the negative audience reaction to CC wasn't a factor in his non-appearance for series 2. We'll just have to wait and see if JM can cut the mustard but at first glance it doesn't seem like much of a drawcard having him on.

And to our American cousins...hopefully someone will decide to screen TG USA so we can all pull it apart like they've done with TG AU...:idiot:

James Morrison eh?
Hmm.

To be honest, regardless.... I'll be watching.

PS: I'm actually waiting for TGAust to go off on a tangent & become it's own show. You know, start doing things alittle different, introduce new stuff into the mix, breakaway from the formula alittle.

I reckon SBS/Freehand have made a good decision here. We all know what happened when the original TG lost a presenter at the end of Series 1 and replaced him with a James ...

It was obvious from 1x06 that James Morrison is a much better fit as a TGA presenter than Charlie. I think Charlie may have been spreading himself a bit thinly with all his commitments and it showed a bit. With all due respect to him, he just didn't seem quite as into it as Warren or Steve.

All the best to Charlie for the future ... and bring on TGA S2. All they need now is a new scriptwriter and that should shut all but the harshest armchair critics up.
