Had a good day yesterday...

I've been on a motorcycle trip from my home in Oregon down through California, and yesterday I was riding down Highway 1, down the Pacific coast from Monterey south to San Simeon. I had never been there before, but I had heard about it many times and it looked very fun on the map, so I was pretty excited.

I was really feeling good when I passed the 'Curvy road next 73 miles' sign, but as I pressed on, I was bogged down by seemingly endless traffic. The road was awesome, but the rolling roadblock was keeping the speed low enough to suck all the fun out of it. Finally I caught some lucky breaks and made some semi-legal passes and I was relatively in the clear.

At this point the road was still amazingly twisty, and I was having a blast carving it up. Then I saw a striking red sports car on the road on the opposite side of the ravine from me, followed by a green one and blue one. As I rounded the bend and they came past me on a short straight I realized that they were a Ferrari 612, an Aston V8 Vantage and some kind of Porsche 911.

So I was temporarily awestruck by that sight (being from Oregon I never see anything interesting car-wise), but I managed to stay on the road and continued on, thinking that I should turn around and try to follow them. About then I see a McLaren Mercedes SLR and a Lamborghini Gallardo (bright green) come around the next turn.

After seeing that I decided I had to try and chase them down, so I pulled over at the next little turn off and sped off after them. After about four minutes of apex strafing I had caught up to the Lambo, just as the first cars were pulling off the road into a lookout point. All of the hot cars stopped and I went by, oggling, and turned around at the next wide spot, then went by again, oggling.

It looked like it might have been one of those fantasy car tours, being as it was such a perfect group of supercars, all of them in their fitting colors and everything. Or it could have just been a bunch of rich guys thrashing their cars up the coast. Either way, it was quite a thrill for someone like me from a small town to get to tear up a great road after some awesome cars. Just thought I'd share.

spend some time down in LA/malibu/santa monica area and you will see so many exotics up n down the street (astons, lambo, ferrari, bentley, rolls, high end porsches, ford GTs, maseratis) that youll go nuts...then quickly desensitized. ive only lived in the area for a few months and ive already seen so many my mind tunes them out. the only things im holding out to see are a zonda or veyron on the street.

I had the great pleasure of seeing on at one of my local petrol stations at like 2:30am. He was with a Diablo and they were rallying to Miami from NYC. The Veyron is just so awesome to behold that close, and I'm not even a fanboy of it.

Just about anywhere along the beach from Santa Monica south to San Clemente you can see 'em. As a kid I never saw why people from out of state would be so amazed to see a Porsche as they are about as common as a cheap Ford in the midwest.

Yeah, the supercar (or even sporty car) pickings are pretty slim up north... I think the most impressive thing I've ever seen up there was a Noble M12, which I just saw while riding down some random backroad near Salem. That's about it.

Oh, I saw an Elise once on the coast somewhere.

Yep, not much going on.

It could have been a group like this, it looks like they're making a swing on the west coast:

They let you experience supercars for a day. I did an event with them last year, got to drive a Ferrari F430, Lamborghini Gallardo, Ford GT, Aston Martin DB9, Z06, and Bentley GT. I think they have added a 911 Turbo, Ferrari 599, and a few others to the stable.

I pity I didn't know you were headed down this way. I live just 15 minutes from Route 1 north of the Golden Gate. We could have gone for a short day ride and you would have been welcome to crash on my couch and use my covered and gated parking spot.

How and when are you headed home? Back the same way?

Thanks for the offer, had I thought about it in advance that would have been fun.
As it is, yesterday I stayed in Temecula and went over and hit Mt. Palomar, and today I rode from there to Dunsmuir. I basically tore ass up the freeway last night/this morning.

That must be pretty awesome, having such amazing roads and scenery just 15 minutes away at any given time. I have a couple of decent mountain roads and canyons to strafe up near me, but nothing that even compares to this stuff down here.

I've read quite a bit of stuff from that guy Pashnit on his website, sounds like he has a pretty tough time finding decent roads...

Oh well. At least I had the opportunity to experience some of the greatness around here.

.

Did you gamble at the Indian casino?

Why didn't you stop and talk to them. Find out about the cars.

If it was me, i wouldnt have bothered, They probably wanted to enjoy the drive and scenery and not be bugged by random strangers about their cars. Plus as carheads, we probably know more about them reading up on the internet then they probably do. Around southern california, the few that ive met who are younger and drive exotics tend to be ill mannered douches who have no interest in speaking to you unless youre female and attractive.
