I was watching the "Butt Out" episode of South Park and was wondering, do European countries or Australia have the same battles over smoking? In our country there is a HUGE, "OMFG SMOKING WILL KILL YOU DEAD TWICE" campaign, and smoking is illegal in many public places. It's considered unfit or uncool by many people to smoke and you can catch shit from a lot of people for smoking. I know in asian countries it's not really a big deal, but I dunno about Europe.

some european countries have smoking bans in pubs and restaurants...and there is a huge campaign.

We have fucking ugly and stupid messages on cigarette boxes. Who doesnt know that smoking is bad? Come on... :bangin: We dont need that ugly stuff. (The messages I mean)

A bit of both I guess. The Gouvernment has started bigger anti-smoking campagns than in the past and there's this smoking ban on some open trainstations (which the general public tends to ignore). Cigarette tax has been raised twice over the last two or three years and there have been calls for smoke free areas in restaurants/bars but thats higly unlikely.

I think the key difference is that smoking isn't as frowned upon as it might be in the US. Nobody will lecture you in public how it will affect your health. Most non smokers won't complain if you light up a cigarette since the stuff is everywhere. No matter where you party in Germany, you will always smell like a taboco factory afterwards.

You will smell like a burnt tabaco factory, I dont mind the smell of non-burnt tabaco.
But there are still places which are worse....France and Belgium cross my mind here...

There are already cities here in which it's illegal to smoke in restaraunts and out in public. You can get a ticket for smoking on the sidewalk in some towns. I don't think someone would lecture you on the effects, but people aren't shy about asking/telling you to put it out or giving you snyde looks. I dunno tho, cause I don't smoke.

I found it really funny that they raised the taxes on tabacco for the health of the people, but then afterwards complained that they made less money... ;-)

Dude, there are entire states that have banned smoking in public places. In Florida, no smoking allowed in restraunts, bars, etc., unless you either:

A) Have a noticable drop in profits for having non-smoking status (which I think the period is over for that).

B) Enforce a cover charge/private club.

I think anyplace that serves food isn't allowed to have smoking, no matter what the situation.

In Belgium:

The Royal Conclusion (Koninklijk besluit) of May 15 1990 states that all smoking in public places is forbidden, except for some designated areas.

Since the 1st of January 1999: all advertising of tobacco products are forbidden. (including sponsorships on race cars => problems with F1 => sponsorships for internationally organised events are allowed untill 2003)

Since the 1st of January 2006: smoking in workspaces is only allowed in designated areas. The employer does not have to create such an area (in that case: no smoking at all)

On the 1st of January 2007 smoking in restaurants, bars, hotels,... will be banned. Some places (bars, casinos, dancings) will however be allowed to create designated smoker areas. More info on this can be found HERE (PDF only in Dutch and French)

nope, just a student doing his research
All "episodes" of the Belgisch staatsblad (Moniteur belge) can be found in PDF HERE (from May 1997 untill today) in a little opendir

sry for the off-topic :(

In England, they simply put 'SMOKING KILLS' on the packet.

HOW BLOODY STUPID DO THEY THINK WE ARE!!!!!

They want to ban smoking in public places over here, and it is looking more likely that it will happen.

The really worring thing is alot of people I know smoke, and I'm only 15....

These signs were forced by the EU, the messages are the same in the EU, only translated. You should see the belgian messages they are in 3 languages.

I like the warnings with the pictures,I guess they will be more effective than just a text.

The European examples (in English) can be seen HERE
The Belgian 3 language versions can be seen HERE

Like you might know Belgium isnt really strict on enforcing some rules. I spoke with a dutchman who opened a restaurant in Antwerp recently and he thought he was in heaven, almost no checks and the people who did give him the admissions didnt really know much... Nice place to do business.
