in 2006 it is thought honda spent a whopping $250million on their engine.... just their engine.

renault bettered them by spending half as much and winning the championship

but the best is Cosworth. just $15 million to produce a fine engine (albeit not too reliable and lacking dev work during the season)

F1 got through about $3bn ... just to race last year. toyota, ferrari and mclaren topped the sheets, spending $400m + each

renault dropped $324mil, ferrar $406 mil, looks like renault got the best for their dosh.

super aguri had a total budget of only $57m.

ferrari are paying kimi $51m in 2007 ! 51m! suprisingly the next highest earner, earning just $25m, is Ralf Schumacher. massa gets a paltry $8m lol

ralf! cashing in on his surname or what.

If any company has the pockets to drop $400m in F1, it's Toyota. I remember reading that Toyota is spending about 4% of it's advertising budget on F1. I'm sure a lot of that $400m is paid by Panasonic and other sponsors. It's obviously clear to everyone that Toyota are in it strictly to sell more Camrys, unlike Ferrari who are in it to win championships. The same criticism is being leveled against Toyota in their recent entry into NASCAR, and many folks are pointing at their F1 track record and wondering how successful Toyota will be.

But paying Ralf $25m is just senseless in racing terms, but in Toyota terms i.e. pure marketability, it makes sense. $51m to Kimi is a huge gamble though especially with a 3 year contract. When he's on the ball, he's quite scary around the track, but when one little thing goes wrong, he throws in the towel too quickly. He needs that Schumacher tenacity.

Jeezus! I new they spent millions upon millions on the cars, but I had no idea drivers got paid so much. Kimi gets 51 mil? That makes most football players look like Earl from the trailer park.

None of these figures surprise me in the least, no other sport has to spend this much money on an annual basis.

As for Toyota, their time in F1 is limited. They came in with the mentality that if you throw enough money at a team, eventually it will start winning races. Big mistake. It's now only a matter of time before the execs in Japan get really angry at the red ink on the balance sheet that is the Toyota F1 team.

And considering their huge budget, you'd have thought they have the common sense to sack Trulli and get a driver in with some decent talent. After all they can afford it.

cosworth's reliability wasn't that bad, it was the williams bit that screwed up. And if the rumours are true, the toyota engine that williams have now is less powerful than the cosworth

this months f1 racing.

Its stupid for teams to spend that much really. I read in an old copy of F1 Racing that in the mid to late nineties, the leading teams (assuming I remember correctly) spent around $90 million. Thats a fraction of the spend since the manufacturers took over. Now they believe they can spend their way to the top, push out the lesser teams, realise F1 is harder than it looks because teams such as Ferrari, Renault and McLaren are much more efficient operations, then pull out. Therefore I believe that the new rules in 2008 will benefit the sport. Unfortunately David Richards doesn't intend on building his own car as allowed by the incoming regulations, but if it keeps the future of the sport secure, then its a good thing.

remember this year there was a huge change in the engine regulations as well as the whole reliability things for 2 races - and homologation happening for this year - really it's two years in one.

Trulli > Ralf

They did make an offer to Montoya after he left Mclaren, but he already signed with Ganassi. Considering Ralf gets paid so much, but hasn't outperformed Trulli, he should get the boot. They should hire Villeneuve to replace him haha.

this months F1 racing magazine.

this year F1 spent $2,986,000,000 and thats seems to be up from 2003 which was quoted by bimmerfan. so the cost cutting is working i see :p

I suppose Kimi must appear to be a bargain to Ferrari when compared to Schumi.

i dont know

for the amount of work schumi put in over his 10 years with ferrari id say he was worth the money. infact it should never really of been called ferrari. it should of been called schumacher brawn todt racing because those 3 were the team. MS pushed fitness to the next level and driver involvement to the next level...he made sure his engineers made something exactly how he wanted it. he wasnt just a good car driver he was a brilliant team driver as well, thats the real reason for success - the amount of time and effort he put in off the race track, i think he did so much that the actual driving was the easy part.

kimi just isnt like that. hes the type who wil just turn up on race day, and drive the car, then go home. when hes on the ball he is quick, but when he's not he just seems to give up. definately not got the tenacity of michael and he probably wont ever come close to the level of team involvement michael had

The way I see it Trulli hasn't proven anything. Yes he regularly outperforms Ralf at qualifying, but come race day there is usually a long line of cars stuck behind him. I don't buy the stuff about him being better then Ralf, at best overall he is equal.

As for Montoya, he's about as overrated as Trulli. If they did manage to hire Montoya they would little, if no progress at all.

x2

I don't think there's any driver in the history of F1 that can match the overall individual driver and team skills MS brought to Ferrari.

It might be just me, but paying that much money to a guy, who HASN'T won the championship and really only won a few races, seems a bit too much...

Even if he is better than anyone else on the pit today (which is questionable).

I agree. To be honest i wish lesser spending team would beat the team with the more budget. Then each team will try to spend as little as possible to try and win the championship which would be very interesting. Yah, i know it is wishful thinking.

The only reason F1 teams didn't spend 400million in the 80's and 90's is that they didnt' have that money. Now they do and they spend it. I honestly don't think it is possible to limit the amount of money F1 teams use without restricting the money they get... and that would ruin F1.

Hmm... lets see... Toyota has the biggest budget and they haven't won a single race yet. Not one. For two years now, Renault has had the smallest budget compared to the other top teams and they won the championship both years.

Stop thinking it is wishful thinking and open the TV and watch the races. :|
