College Football. Does anybody watch?

They should hang the guy from one of the trees, chop it up, and sell the woodchips for $99 apiece.

AUBURN, Alabama ? Auburn University today confirmed that an herbicide commonly used to kill trees was deliberately applied in lethal amounts to the soil around the Toomer?s Corner live oaks on campus, and there is little chance to save the trees.

The trees are the traditional gathering place following a major sports victory. Auburn Tigers fans festoon the trees with toilet paper as a jubilant sign of Auburn pride. Most recently, of course, it was the scene of celebration for Auburn's victory over the Oregon Ducks in the BCS National Championship game on Jan. 10.

Police arrested Harvey Almorn Updyke from Dadeville on Wednesday night in relation to the poisoning of the oak trees at Toomer's Corner in Auburn. He's being held on a $50,000 bond.

A person calling Paul Finebaum's radio show, who identified himself as "Al" from Dadeville, said he poisoned the trees.

Yea, that guy is scum. The crap thing is that he will only get a slap on the wrist since all he did was kill a few trees - there is no accounting in the law for the tradition he is destroying.

In other news, tradition per se, the investigation into Auburn's recruiting has been expanded.

Ha! I love those old "Family Portrait" pics. I wish the Big XII would replace some of the teams that left with old SWC rivals. TCU and SMU would be awesome to have back on Baylor's conference schedule, as would Rice.

If you listen to the second clip in the .zip I posted, it's a federal offense and a man in a similar case got 9 years in prison.

Just a heads up, Kenny Chesney has made a documentary about former UT Vols quarterback Condredge Holloway. It's part of ESPN's Year of the Quarterback. It's worth checking out, whether you're a Vol fan or not.

Article on it here.

This should be interesting...

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith has returned to campus, and a news conference has been called for Tuesday night after a report that football coach Jim Tressel was aware of potential NCAA violations involving star quarterback Terrelle Pryor and others months before the school was told.

Yahoo! Sports reported Monday that Tressel knew of allegations of improper benefits to Pryor and five other players as early as April 2010 -- at least seven months before the university found out from a U.S. Attorney.

Tressel had not resigned or been fired as of 5:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday, sources within Ohio State's athletic department told The Columbus Dispatch.

Tressel's contract requires that he report any -- the word "any" is underlined in the contract -- possible rules or legal infractions immediately.

"We have reported a violation, a perceived violation, that we were having discussions with them [the NCAA] about the best way to handle it," Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee told The Associated Press while at the statehouse for the governor's State of the State speech. "We reported that immediately when we found it."

"We are moving very much forward and I am confident that we will solve these issues," Gee added, according to the Ohio News Network.

Gee, Tressel and Smith all will be at a 7 p.m. ET news conference at the Jack Nicklaus Museum on the Ohio State campus.

Smith came back to campus Tuesday, skipping meetings with television network officials in New York about this year's NCAA men's basketball tournament, to address the brewing controversy involving Tressel, who is 106-22 in his 10 years as coach of the Buckeyes. Smith is the chairman of the NCAA's Division I men's basketball committee which selects, seeds and brackets the teams.

Smith has said the local U.S. Attorney's office on Dec. 7 alerted the school that some of its players were selling items such as jerseys and championship rings to Edward Rife, who owns Fine Line Ink Tattoos in Columbus. Soon after, the school opened an investigation and informed the NCAA of the possible rules violations.

On Dec. 23, Pryor was suspended by the NCAA for the first five games of the 2011 season, along with starting tailback Dan "Boom" Herron wide receiver DeVier Posey, offensive tackle Mike Adams and defensive lineman Solomon Thomas. All the players were allowed to play in Ohio State's 31-26 victory against Arkansas in the Allstate Sugar Bowl. Another player was suspended for one game.

On his Twitter account, Pryor posted a message early Tuesday morning: "THE Ohio State Buckeyes face and overcome any adversity that comes our way! Brings us closer together As a team. And brings us closer 2 GOD"

Offensive lineman Michael Brewster posted the following message on Twitter: "We don't run scared during hard times...Buckeyes Handle Adversity Together ... SACREDBROTHERHOOD"

If it is proven that Tressel knew about the possible NCAA violations and did not inform Smith or the compliance office, the coach and the program could face more sanctions.

Tressel signed his most recent Ohio State contract on March 9, 2010.

Under section 4.1d of that contract, Tressel is bound to report any possible violation of Big Ten or NCAA bylaws immediately.

That portion of the contract states that the coach shall "Know, recognize and comply with all federal, state and local laws, as well as all applicable policies, rules and regulations of Ohio State, and governing athletic rules, including but not limited to, the Big Ten Conference and the NCAA ..."

It later continues, in the event that the coach learns of a potential infraction, "... and immediately report to the [athletic] Director and to the Department's Office of Compliance Services in writing if any [underlined in the contract] person or entity, including without limitation, representatives of Ohio State's athletic interests, has violated or is likely to violate any such laws, policies, rules or regulations."

Oh look, OSU finally schedules an opponent from a real conference for OOC! The SEC?!?! VANDERBILT!!!! Wait, Vandy?

/golfclap OSU

And then we'll get to listen to OSU fans talk about their real schedule. Oh, and Tressell is really enduring a tough punishment. Nailbiter!

As big a nailbiter as what will happen in the wake of the not-at-all-surprise news about the Fiesta Bowl. Think it will change anything at other bowls, or that they will even be looked at?

Lol.

I hate to be 'that guy' but the Big Ten is a tough conference to play in and it's getting stronger year after year. It may not be filled with superstar teams like other conferences but the games are almost always hard-fought and unpredictable. Just look at the OSU-Wisconsin game from last season. OSU should have won easily but Wisconsin stepped up their game against a conference rival and came away with a convincing win. Also, you can't ignore the fact that for much of last season three or four Big Ten teams were in the top ten at any given time and the conference championship was a three-way tie. That seems like some pretty stiff competition to me.

Prediction time: highest ranked OSU next year will be Oklahoma State....because you can't be higher than number 1.

The tree poisoner had a court hearing Wednesday where they decided to let him live with relatives out of state.

He claims that after he left court he was attacked at a gas station before he could leave Alabama. As if we haven't heard that one before.

The next day he did an interview on Paul Finebaum's show (the same show where he first confessed the crime).

After watching this video I almost bought more season tickets...

Speaking of OSU, Holgerson is confirmed as head coach of WVU, even after drunken hijinks stories circulated thanks to Stewart's fat wife.

Dude can coach...even hung the fuck over. I have on good authority that 4 nights a week Holgerson was at the Indian Casino about 100 miles from Stillwater and his offense was still the number 3 ranked in the nation...

I for one am glad that a coach isn't some religious super buttoned up weirdo like Urban Meyer that just has a freak out moment when it all gets too much. Coaches need to destress.

I agree, it's comforting to know that there is some degenerate out there coaching.
