I'd just like to say congratulations on the sucessful flight of the Scaled Composities Spaceship 1.

Yea, it was cool to hear it went OK today. They have a couple weeks to do it again if they want the money & contract tho.

Imagine living to see the day when the first publicly built, manned craft actually fly into space. They're saying that in 15 years public space transportation will be a reality.
 
An american company (Scaled Composites) today launched the first privately funded (i.e. non-government) plane into space.

They carried it to 15km on another plane, dropped it then it shot it's self to 62 miles above the earth.

Also 1st civilian astronaut, 1st civilian plane to break Mach3.

There's a competition called the X-Prize to win 10Million US for the first team to get a 3 person (or 1 person with ballast) re-useable plane to 62 miles, twice in a 2 week time frame.
 
Yeah, was pretty awesome. Watched it this morning. :)
 
I read about it - didn't know that it actually had done it yet. That's cool. I wonder how long it'll be before Donald Trump or some billionaire opens a moon resort? I think we need a poll on whether or not near-space travel (eg the moon) will become common in 100 years 8)

seriously.. spending tons of money to go in space.. can't we try not to destroy our own fucking planet before going in space to send our crap? :roll:
 
^^ Space is rather "biggish", we could fill it with endless amounts of "crap" :) .

Anyhow in my mind, the Pros far outweigh the Cons.
 
The whole space program debate is really interesting.

At times it does seem like a massive waste or resources, but if you look at the ammount of technologies developed as a result of research in space programs, and the way they have greatly benefited the environment\our lives, it's very hard to make a decision if space programs are worthwhile or not.

For the most part, I would say they are worth it.
 
hopefully we will have the first man on mars by 2020 8) .
 
I'm glad I'm not american... I'd hate to see billions of my tax money spend on sending a dude on Mars :roll:
 
I'm quite happy to see this. Although sending people to space may not look good on paper, it's really good to mankind. Exploration, knowledge, etc.
 
I for one (as a tax paying US resident) am glad they're spending money on it.
I'm sure there are plenty of materials and technology that exist now because of space programs that would not have existed otherwise.
Those inventions have probably helped industry (and the economy) tremendously, and I wouldn't be surprised if space programs have produced as much money from that perspective as they have received.
 
A $10 million price? They must be joking! Just building a spacecraft is at least worth ten times that amount :roll:
