You could also try virtualdub (http://www.virtualdub.org/) although I'm not sure if that can convert WMV, it reencode any AVI or MPEG.

Edit: I just found this nice guide, http://www.divx-digest.com/articles/wmv2avi.html, it might be useful.

I usually use TMPGenc.

Go to doom9.org

there is a world of info there.
