Save the Cosworths! Are some of those old enough to be imported to America yet?

1985 is the magic number... since the Sierra Cosworth RS started production in 1986 we have to wait one more year.

Sierras are I think. There are number of RS500s in the US and Canada. A few members on the Merkur forums had them. There are probably more.

willing to bet those are XR4Ti conversions (or illegal) There used to be a canadian company that made full RS500 (and RS Cosworth) body kits for the XR as well as doing drivetrain conversions. But i know for sure none of the Cosworth versions of the Sierra are legal for importation as of the last published NHTSA list (we can get the Escort RS Cosworth 1994-1995 thought)

I remember 2 specifically. One was owned by a guy in Canada and the other was from New York City. I'm about 99.99% sure that both of them were genuine. The latter was owned by the founder of one of the forums, www.merkursport.com. Sadly, it was stolen a few years ago

I know this is a repost, but I don't know where the original was.

Posted by me ;)

Yeah, I've seen these photos before. They are off some Swedish guys yard, and he refuses to sell any of the cars, they're just sitting in his yard rotting. :(

Even when it becomes legal it would be far cheaper to just turn a XR4Ti into a Cosworth.

Not if you want a 100% swap, you'd need to change just about everything, including the bodyshell.

No it won't be a 100% swap, but the cars are 98% identical. The rear window isn't that big a deal.

A Cosworth and a normal Sierra sure as hell are not 98% identical.. For instance every single drivetrain part is different, and most of the suspension, the brakes, the engine, the gearbox, the bodyshell and the interior are different. It'd cost you more to buy a Cossie in parts and swap it over than to buy a genuine one. And in my opinion the Xr4i rear side window looks really stupid with the Cossie bodykit.

Sorry I was referring to the difference between the Sierra and Xr4i in general.

I'd still imagine it would be cheaper to buy the Cosy parts separately and bolt them on a Xr4i than shipping and importing one to the US. What body differences are there besides the window?

And no having one different sticker or piece of trim does not mean "OMG OMG DIFFERANT KARZ!!!!!" as we have discussed elsewhere.

Well there are body panel differences, bumper, grill, hood, rear wing and some other exterior differences headlights for example. I'd like to do a RS500 "clone" on mine not for the sake of having an "RS500" but just because it improves the appearance so much. I probably wouldn't bother making every piece of kit 100% pure Cossie. I'd probably do a non-Cossie engine, transmission, suspension and interior. As far as the rear window goes, I couldn't care less.

Well as Ford SA has shown you can fit a 302 in there. Edelbrock heads, better flowing intake/exhaust and you can have a 400hp monster. :p

Airemenair can probably give you better numbers but last time i did the research making a near perfect running Sierra Cosworth clone is going to run probably 10-15K depending on the cost of the original XR4Ti and if you wanted to do a full drivetrain swap or just a SOHC Pinto to DOHC YB head swap and that will only get you a Sierra RS Cosworth. That said i can get a real RS500 (37K miles) for 30K shipped to canada. Frankly i would pay the extra 15-20K for the real deal and the added umph of an RS500 vs. the straight Sierra Cosworth

The Canadian one was probably genuine as canada only has a 15 year law instead of 25. As for the merkursport guy i highly doubt it was actually legal. He could have gotten it into the country any number of ways and then once it is here there are plenty of ways to get it titled and registered none of which make it actually legal. If the car isn't on that NHTSA list and you can't figure out some way to convince the govt it's a kit car (see the R34 Kaizo debacle) it can't be legalized for road use.
