Covid 19 CRISIS

Texas population (29M as of 2019) is higher than NYS (19.45M) and IL (12.9M)

Presented in a more honest statistic (anyone else, feel free to destroy these numbers as they are very much back-of-napkin and using rather old data and @93Flareside's numbers of casualties), That means incidence in Texas is 206.9 per 100k, 277.63 in NY, and 232.6 per 100k in IL.

Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics ;) . Do not be swayed by fear, and remember that politicization is very much a thing. The reason Canada had a tenth of the cases, which was lorded as "Look at those US idiots" is because it has more or less a tenth of the population. Land doesn't get COVID, people do.

CA, with a population of about 39.51M (2019) and 68,000 deaths is at about 172.1 per 100k. Better than everyone, but as you can see, Texas is merely "within range" despite very loud and extremely well publicized idiocy.

California population: 39.51 million
California deaths: 68,042
% x 100,000: 172.21

Texas population: 29 million
Texas Deaths: 62,476
% x 100,000: 215.43

Illinois population: 12.67 million
Illinois deaths: 27,175
% x 100,000: 214.483

Florida population: 21.48 mllion
Florida deaths: 50,825
% x 100,000: 236.615

I think an important thing to remember about these totals is that they are including both initial outbreaks (from before things like masks and social distancing, etc were so politicized (don't get me wrong, they still were, but not as much as today, IMO)), as well the most recent as post-vaccine-availability wave.

For example, Illinois's first wave was bigger than its 3rd wave. Its first wave was nearly as big (in terms of deaths per day) as Florida's (just under 200 peaks vs 240 peaks), despite having less than 60% of Florida's population. But then you look at Florida, and this recent 3rd wave was Florida's largest, despite the availability of vaccines, but factoring in lower % of their population vaccinated.

Texas's 3rd wave 7-day average is 290 and climbing after wide vaccine availability, while their 2nd wave which peaked in February was 344, so the current wave is 84% as high as their previous peak.

Compared to California, we got hit earlier than most other states, and were pretty quick to shut things down, and more so than many other places. Our 3rd wave is 79% less than our 2nd, with the lowest case rate in the nation More than 82% of the state has had at least one dose, and we have lots of mask mandates, business restrictions including requiring proof of vaccination for restaurants and bars, etc.

This is some AMAZING mental gymnastics.

Today, on a flight from Prague to Oslo I got to see what happens when a group of (drunk-ish mostly Ukrainian/Russian speaking) passengers don’t bother wearing a face mask and are generally difficult to deal with for the air crew. As the plane was parked at the gate at OSL we were all told to remain seated until further notice, then a group of policemen came in and escorted them out to be fined.

Also, if they are non-EU citizens, that fine may constitute grounds for expulsion from Norway and the Schengen-area with a two-year prohibition on entry, so generally larking about drinking heavy liquor from their tax-free bottles, without facemasks and gleefully ignoring the crew‘s orders to mask up, pack away their liquor bottles, and take their seats wasn’t so smart.

They were given an applause by the rest of the passengers as they were escorted out. I thanked the crew for actually doing something here, because it was like feeding time in a zoo for much of the flight. The crew said that landing in Germany and kicking them off there was actually and option on the table, and they would have done that if they hadn’t eventually calmed down.

I was next to a Polish gentleman on my flight to FRA for ringmeet. This guy also struggled to keep a mask on and the German flight attendant wasn't having it. The 3rd time he got told off, as she was walking away she was muttering "he thinks it's funny."

I mean, how hard can it be to just do as you’re being told by the crew. It’s not like they are ordering you to murder someone. They were repeatedly being told to put away their bottles, mask up, sit down, and shut up for the #th time. If you have a big problem with following instructions from the crew and wearing a face mask, then don’t bother flying, it’s not as if they didn’t know they were supposed to wear a mask.

nobody gets up in arms about the seat belt.

For a lot of people, the point is to do the opposite of what somebody else tells them, no matter the situation.

I blame authoritarian parenting. If you were forced to do all kinds of BS as a child (such as eat all your food, I don’t care if you’re full), you’re not going to be very good at distinguishing between sensible and nonsensical instructions.

I dont know even before Covid people lose alot of mental powers in airports and airplanes (magnets in aircraft cause cognitive loss?)
With Covid it is only amplified. Mask objections deliberately ignore the situations that could be happening in a large swath of people. How do you know that someone in this airport section or that someone on the plane isn't immunocompromised from an organ transplant? Ignorant selfishness.

Goes to @NecroJoe was sharing in that article. I dont know if we can figure out how to get the message to every psychological archetype so maybe some of them will have to die! Oh what's this over here? Forbidden Vaccine DONT TOUCH THE VACCINE! soooo bad look at this naughty vaccine.

I feel the trouble is we now have to transition from seeing "the end" to knowing that "were not all on the same page" and "conditions change". Its a big reshuffle from things Covid exasperated from economic waves to societal changes. We know there will always be an unvaccinated population we need to protect them as best we can. The vaccinated may have more access than those who dont have vaccinated status. We are going to see periods of increases in transmission where more precautions will be advisable. Other times we will see people more relaxed and better able to weigh their own risk. Those who are invested in complaining will continue to complain about mask and vaccines

The really depressing thing is that none of this is e due to covid anymore. we see societies returning to normal-ish after mass vaccination. This is 100% down to a deeply divided, hyper-individualized society and a partisan political system in which both sides brutally politicized vaccination and public health response.

This is no longer on covid but on the way We The People chose.

Funny, I blame a lack of authority in current and recent parents, this and the previous generation, they lack, well, everything to be a decent human being.
Resulting in shit like above.

My generation would get the shit kicked out of us for acting up......that tends to stick.

I must admit that you do occasionally fail to strike me as FinalGear’s happiest and most joyful member, so yes, I can see that getting physically abused by your parents has left a mark.

There are other ways to discipline a child. I recently gave my godchild (3) a very big fright because I dusted off my “emergency use only” voice to stop her sitting on her sister’s (1) back. Guess what didn’t happen again after that.

I want to see that working when they are 13 :p

What do I know, I don't have kids, the truth could lie between the helicopter gunship parents and the "let him discover it" ones.

“Democracy is the worst form of government – except for all the others that have been tried.”

It rings as true today as it has since it was said.

Yup. Basically, the job is to teach the little buggers that they can have an input as long as they are involved and qualified; exceptions for threats do of course apply.

Which brings me nicely back on topic: anti-vaxxers and covid deniers think they aren’t involved in the pandemic, they’re not usually qualified to comment on medical issues and they certainly don’t know how to deal with the threats posed by this virus.

What they do know is how to get attention, just like a toddler. Sucks that they can no longer get approval as easily as they used to!

The crew said that landing in Germany and kicking them off there was actually and option on the table, and they would have done that if they hadn’t eventually calmed down.
 from a crew perspective they're an unnecessary safety risk if not at least somewhat under control, so getting rid of them sooner than later is a reasonable possibility.

I should not have read that.
Read the comments
Nobody should read Breitbart.
