Covid 19 CRISIS

Monday July 19th is Freedom Day in England, 50k+ infections a day.

So the new Health minister caught covid, Boris and Chancellor Rishi Sunak will now have to self isolate after saying they would ignore their own advice to do so. A 157 minute u-turn.

Test and trace app currently has instructed 530k people to self isolate

Of 83690 covid cases reported in Berlin in 2021 so far, 433 have been among those vaccinated. Even taking into account that most of these happened during the third wave before we had any vaccine coverage to speak of, the share of vaccinated individuals is low. Get your shots, people!

Early data:

New study suggests Johnson & Johnson less effective against variants

Overall, the results found the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines to be 94-95 percent effective in preventing moderate to severe cases of COVID-19, and Johnson & Johnson to be 66.9 percent effective.

"Today, the FDA is announcing revisions to the vaccine recipient and vaccination provider fact sheets for the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) COVID-19 Vaccine to include information pertaining to an observed increased risk of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) following vaccination,"
"Reports of adverse events following use of the Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine under emergency use authorization suggest an increased risk of Guillain-Barré syndrome during the 42 days following vaccination,"

@jack_christie the first link is highly questionable reporting as it translates a lab study (neutralizing antibody counts vs. pseudoviruses) 1:1 into real-world protection.

That being said, it is highly plausible that the J&J vaccine like the AZ one can profit massively from an mRNA booster shot.

EDIT: The lab data shows a lower hit in antibody counts from Delta than from Beta. And from Beta, we got J&J study data - so the real-world efficacy for J&J against Delta probably is worse than against Alpah, but better than against Beta.

NYT reporting similar:
Although troubling, the findings result from experiments conducted with blood samples in a laboratory, and may not reflect the vaccine’s performance in the real world. But the conclusions add to evidence that the 13 million people inoculated with the J.&J. vaccine may need to receive a second dose — ideally of one of the mRNA vaccines made by Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna, the authors said.
“The message that we wanted to give was not that people shouldn’t get the J.&J. vaccine, but we hope that in the future, it will be boosted with either another dose of J.&J. or a boost with Pfizer or Moderna,” said Nathaniel Landau

Just another thing to be aware of.

A few weeks ago we were down to 12 or 13, this is where it stands as of tonight. It keeps creeping up higher and higher as the days pass.

St. Louis is begging people who haven't been vaccinated yet to get their shot, but as has been the case for the last year and a half, most of Missouri is very much "Meh, don't need it, and fuck you if you think you're making me wear a mask again!". ICU's in the area are currently almost 90% full and they're expecting it to get even worse than it was at its peak last year.

Yup, much the same story here in southwestern Missouri. ICUs filling up, people not getting vaccinated, etc. I did see that Parsons authorized a lottery of 900 $10k prizes for people who have gotten their shot and those that still can (before the lottery runs out at the end of October. It's cheesy, but might get some that wouldn't otherwise to go ahead and get it.

Here, feel frustrated and annoyed like I do.

The mask mandate for STL county, not just the city, is returning on Monday. So naturally all the GOP leaders are falling over themselves to oppose this so they can score brownie points before the midterms. That includes the Missouri state AG who's filing a lawsuit stop this oppression.

Eric Schmitt was one of the asswipes who singed on in support of the Texas lawsuit that tried to overturn the election results last year.

New UK health minister thinks people should stop cowering from the virus

No. UK minister saying get vaccinated and then go back to living your normal life.

Which is actually very good advice, I must agree.

His tweet is a perfect example of “I’m fine, so why are people complaining?” tone-deafness. No humility, no gratitude, just ignorance of other people’s suffering that is greater than his own.

His job is to oversee and organise the reduction of such suffering, not to belittle it.

Hard to believe how incredibly ignorant he has been in such a short space of time, comparing covid to the common cold, rolling back restrictions in the face of a surge and catching covid:

Anger over Sajid Javid’s advice to not ‘cower’ from Covid

Bereaved families, Labour and Lib Dems all condemn health secretary’s ‘insensitivity’
