I've got a desktop computer which used to get connected to the net via cable. However, this is no longer possible in my new flat, so I installed an old wifi card I had laying about. (lspci says "Ralink corp. RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI") They conection is fine, but now there is a quiet cracking in the sound output. This is unaffected by muting the output channel, or unloading the wifi module from the kernel. Any ideas what I could do about this?

Try shielding the speaker cable (or the USB cable if you have an external sound card). I had that problem with my old router, which I needed to overcharge to increase the range.
