Who says anything about them having a better life though? Maybe they were actually being smuggled to be a prostitute.

correct. they promise them a better life and as they enter the country they keep them in fear.

...at the end, it probably didn't get any better for many.
 
there are loads of people do this to smuggle themselves from thailand to malaysia and vice versa.... this guy actually hid at the bottom of a car before to get into singapore

I am guessing, heatsensor.(kinda like a xray)

or yes, as you have to stop and they ask you questions. they might heard something or got a tip. they also run your lic. plates on the car.

by the way, when you cross the mexican boarder (tijuana) and drives pass san diego. after that, there is also an other check point which the boarder patrol has.
