Ripplin answered it already:

Speaking of Robbie, his H3 sure is interesting. Looks kinda like one of Toyota's trucks, except flattened.

i really hope he wins. the guy has a huge amount of skill (and i dont usually say that about nascar people)

Nicely put. I'm not big on Nascar either. ;)

Personally, I hope Carlos Sainz wins, but I'm not holding my breath or anything.

Aaah, it's nice to come back here and see some Dakar news. I'm still just "Scrutineering" at this point, but can't wait to see the Day 1 clips.

There is nothing like an endurance race to bring out the best in drivers and vehicles. And the desert is such a superb location ... to ruin everything. :)

Desert won't be till Day 3 and it will also be a 314 km stage. Day 2 had some excitement.

In the newspaper today was a bit with Jan de Rooy and this year was suppose to be his last Dakar but he is a bit pissed at the FIA so he will be back next year. In force.
It may not be with a DAF but he said they will built 15 trucks so the FIA can be happy and they'll be going for places 1 & 2.

So, the FIA have awaken the beast.

Oh and Robby Gordon is 5th on stage 3 so far.

That's awesome. They really lit a fire under him. Hope the feeling lasts for a year. :p

One crazy thing I saw was an American team driving a Chevy Silverado...with no windscreen! That just seems foolish. Maybe they have a plexiglass windscreen tucked away somewhere for when they really need it.

Is this the one?

In regards to the DeRooy/DAF vs. maFIA, I hope DeRooy/DAF really nailed them!
I read that the DAF teams were given the go-ahead originally, but just before the race they were told otherwise, thus having to change some point on the trucks. They managed to do some but not all, given the time.

What is the deal with the Unimog? They have not raced one of these in the Dakar for a while, right?

Hey, Bihus, am I correct you were at the start?
I almost ended up going there this year, and since I fly for free, it was a good opportunity to go visit home.

The more I see and hear about this rally, the more I want to participate!

Yup, that looks right. It'll be interesting to see how they handle a sandstorm if they really don't have a windscreen tucked away somewhere. :p

I had to look up what you meant by Unimog, but once I saw them, I remembered. Here's a pic of one of the entries:

I thinks there about a handful of them this year. I am surprised that they have not used them more often, considering it is such a good workhorse. But I guess a good workhorse does not necessarily mean a good race horse.
They are such beautiful trucks, I think.

Edit:
I just watched the episode of the first day! Pretty nice report! What channel was that from (channel s8s sport ?).
They showed Flash Gordon in his H3. That thing looked clumsy, but like Gordon said on his site, the H3 will be at home in the desert stages.
And Biasion doing a little power sliding in his Iveco!

Thanks again for the mates making this episodes available!

Yeah, I was at the start. The first bike started at 6:30 am, but we were all too tired. We just stayed till 7:30. The bikes started in inverse order, so the cars would probably go the same way. The last car, iirc, started at around 10:30. :?

So they did not start at 00:00? I guess the organization knew that we Portuguese like to drink and party, so they scheduled it for later, to give everyone time to compose themselves and go watch the start. :D

A few years ago, I went to the see the machines at the scrutneering locale (Vincennes) in Paris. I did not go to see the start by the Eiffel Tower/Ecole Militaire, though. :( I was a bit busy with a lady named Veuve Clicquot, if you know what I mean. :D
