Deciding between a D50 DSLR or a Fujifilm FinePix S9500

Goodwood Festive of Speed 06, I may not have my DSLR in time for the 1st race this year at Thruxton. But thats only 1 motorsport racing weekend, which is not much I still get it in time for the other great racing and car events.

Just got my D50 2 weeks ago and love it. My previous camera was a N80, which was great, I just want to go digital. The only small things I can think of to pick on the D50 about:
1 control dial instead of 2
No backlight for the top display
No on-demand grid lines

None of these features are worth the cost difference to go to a D200 or a D70s though... so I'm happy.

Ok guys, I,ve been looking at the reviews of the Fujifilm FinePix S9500. Which says its a match for entry level DSLR's, so I may get one of these insted of the D50.

I will be deciding up till July, also does anyone know if a Circular polarizer will fit onto a Fujifilm FinePix S9500. And does anyone know if the Fujifilm FinePix S9500, will accept a Hitachi 4GB Microdrive Compact Flash (Type II) Memory Card.

Hey, I used to have the S9500 before I got my Nikon. Its a very good entry level DSLR-like camera, it does pretty much everything u want ie. shooting RAW, and all the functions u would get with a full DSLR.
If you want samples, both of the galleries below were shot with the S9500:

P.S. Some of the shots arent that good, i have improved a lot since these!! ;)

I would recomend www.Sterlingtek.com for batteries. They have a very very good reputation on Fredmiranda.com a major photography forum. I would also recomend the D50 over the Fuji due to the fact that you can get different lenses. You mentioned you were looking at filters and adapter and I looked at that page and you will be disapointed with what you get if you buy the filters that are like that at the end. Buy the Nikon and then invest in some glass you will not be unsatisfied. When your thinking about a decision on a SLR your not buying a camera as much as your buying into a photography system.

it seems like you're learning toward the fuji S9500. May I ask why?

I just bought a Canon EOS Digital Rebel xt(350D) and i simply LOVE it. My friend has the D50 nikon but it's not as good/fast as mine. I can snap continuous pictures probably 3x faster than he can w/ his d50. The 350d has 7 AF points vs the 5 available on the d50(was it 5?)

you should advise your friend to get some proper cf card then, because the difference between the two should be between 2.8/sec to 2.5/sec. ;)
and you only need one AF field anyway...

tvr fan,

i'd like to know what makes you go for the fuji, too. sure, its a very good camera, but a dslr will always allow you to upgrade. the body isn't all that important anyway, compared to a good lense.

my friedn has the sandisk Ultra II . Now in my book, that is the same as the CF card I was using!!

Guh? My D50 snaps at a full 2.5fps on JPEG L Fine with my Ultra II, the 350D should be only slightly quicker at best. Dunno what he's doing wrong, but there should be no reason for a 3X disparity...

BTW, the 7 AF zones are in almost the same position as the D50's 5, they didn't put the extra 2 anywhere really useful. The Rebel XT also can't spot meter, which is an incredibly handy function on the D50.

hehe tru that bcs. I definitely dont want to start a 350d vs a d50 argument. You are probably right in most aspect. As for me, the looks for the 350d was the main reason.

Because its lens is one of the best in its class, it also rivals entry level DSLR's like the D50. You can buy add ons for it, like for the lens. Also my Dad told me you need classes to take full use of a DSLR.

Plus the CCD can get dust on it, and if the CCD in the D50 gets too much then you may need it professionally cleaned. But like I said before I am still deciding between the D50 and S9500, and I also saw this review for the S9500:

http://www.trustedreviews.com/article.aspx?art=2072

One last thing the person who reviewed the S9500 told me about this site, for S9500 lens filters and extenders:

http://www.raynox.co.jp/english/digital/s9000/index.htm

And check this short review of the S9500:

http://www.cameras2u.com/products/details.cfm?PRODUCT=N077070A&refer=prg

But if I do buy a S9500 i may buy this CF card in 4GB:

http://www.picstop.co.uk/Compact-Flash-CF/SanDisk-Ultra-II-Compact-Flash-Card-4GB/Feed_1476

Or I may buy a 2GB one. One last thing I am no semi pro or pro photographer, which is why the S9500 may win it for me.

But I can always wait till next year, then the D70 will become cheaper next year folks.

Well dude, it says 300 GBP on that site, that's about 600 USD. And for 600USD i can get a d50 w/ a nice lens. So now I ask, why go for an "almost slr" when you can get a real SLR.

Btw, this fuji reminds me of the Canon Powershot S2 (S3 is the newest one) that also has the 10x zoom and all those features like Aperture priority/shutter prio/manual mode/ movie @ 640x resolution etc etc. Shaped the same and also use 4xAA.
Well judging from the 4xAA my friend's S2 uses.... the battery runs out really fast. Possibly runs out with maybe 8 hrs of shooting. If you get the D50, you probably get 8 hrs of shooting, then recharge instead of shoving in new AA batteries.

What i'm saying is, why go for an ALMOST slr when you can get a full slr. Your dad is half right on using an SLR. It does take time to learn, but you dont need a class. everything I know about SLR was acquired from online sources... I have a few good sites to explain even what F-stops mean.

I only bought my 350D a month ago.... but now look at me, 3 lenses already!!

x 2 - I don't see why you'd go for a non SLR for the same price as a DSLR.

Oh how I want a DSLR...

The lowest priced D50 DSLR with a 18-55mm lens in the UK online is: ?389.49, while the S9500 is: ?331.95. Add a ?5.00 shipping cost.

If I brought a D50 with a SanDisk Extreme III 1GB Secure Digital Card it would cost me: ?427.97.

Plus I would have to buy a spare battery for the D50, the battery could cost ?15-?20. But what ever camera I buy, I will either buy a 2GB or 4GB one. But 2x SanDisk Ultra II Secure Digital (SD) Cards at 2GB will cost me: ?198.99, which includes the shipping.

Another thing if I buy a D50, I am looking to buy 1 or 2 different Hoya filters. Anyway now a S9500, if I buy one of these I am looking to buy either a SanDisk Extreme III 2GB CompactFlash Card. Which will cost me ?73.40 including the ?2.95 delivery cost, or a SanDisk High Speed CompactFlash Extreme III 4GB that costs ?145.25 at the lowest price.

With free shipping. Now you add the 2GB one with the S9500, and that costs: ?413.30. But if I buy the S9500 with the 4GB card: ?482.20, now you see how much lower it will cost me.

And if I buy a a S9500 I will buy 2 filters:

Hoya Circular Polarizer in a 58mm size, which will set me back ?36.99 with free shipping.

And either Hoya Ultra Violet haze filter in 58mm (?20-?25) or a Hoya 58mm Skylight Filter for ?19.00 with free shipping. One last thing I seen 8GB Compact flash cards, at ?245.99, but I think there is no need for them.

Until DSLR's and Digicams with 15 megapixels or more come down in price.

lol dude, why r u expecting to buy hoya filters already? First LEARN the camera. Worry about the cost later!

You can only reach a certain levl with the fuji, but the d50 gives you a much bigger range. It could be the camera for the next 10 years.

You forgot its up to me to decide just before FOS 06, if I buy a D50 with 2 filters 2x 2GB cards. Spare battery it will cost me between ?640-?670. Plus I would have to pay for a camera course, to get full use of the D50. Which, may cost me up to ?200 most likely.

Now if I buy a S9500, it would allow me still have money over to repair this bad ram in my PC. Which just caused another random restart, plus if I buy a S9500.

I could buy one of those with 2 filters, 4GB card between ?520-?570. And the S9500 supports 3 types of cards, plus it would leave me plenty of time to wait for the D70 to come down in price.

Remember about the add ons for the S9500 at this page:

http://www.raynox.co.jp/english/digital/s9000/index.htm

But if I brought a S9500, i could get it in time for BTCC at Thruxton, while borrowing 3-4 XD cards from my Dad for the S9500. Aswell Cnet said the S9500 is a entry level DSLR slayer.

Anyway one more thing, remember the CCD in a D50 could get so much dust it may need to be cleaned by a pro.

You are getting way too much gear right off.. Why on earth would you need two 2GB cards? I've been doing just fine with one 1GB CF. And the spare battery? Mine lasts for a month before recharging, the battery has never died on me.

I don't see a point in the Fuji, when you can have a DSLR for almost the same price. If youre looking into filters and lenses that means you should already forget about the Fuji! When you've learnt how to use the Fuji you will already be craving for a DSLR. But hey it's your money..

The dust? You have got to be kidding me! Well sure if you store it in a bucket of sand or something. It's not really a big deal, cleaning the sensor, and it wont cost you a fortune in a shop..

And those add-on lenses probably degrade the image quality of that glass.
