Deciding between a D50 DSLR or a Fujifilm FinePix S9500

Its not almost the same price, it costs way more to buy good stuff for a DSLR. Remember I am in rip off UK, and maybe you don't go to long car events and motorsport events like me.

Also 1GB does not hold as many 6-8 megapixel photos, as I want. Remember the S9500 can rival an entry level DSLR while offering some of the best 9 megapixels for its price. But didn't you look at the costs of things in the UK.

Last thing I decide, just before FOS 06. Plus FOS 06 will be running for about 9 hours, while I,m there.

LOL. I should buy the D50 for you and drop it off to you in a week(i'm going to london in a week). I live in the US.

A 1GB card in a D50 on Fine JPEG L holds ~400 shots. (The camera estimates 284, but trust me on that one.) You also won't need a spare battery - I've shot for 2 full days, over 800 shutter actuations plus LCD use, without killing the battery. DSLR's are extremely frugal of battery consumtion.

Also, add-on lenses for the Fuji will never rival what you can get with a proper DSLR. never. The only place you can add glass on the Fuji is on the front of the lens - which is actually the least important part.

Need extra reach? DSLR with telephoto & teleconverters FTW.

Plus I would have to pay for a camera course, to get full use of the D50. Which, may cost me up to ?200 most likely.

Why are you so focussed on the course? You'll do just fine with the camera's manuals and even more so the guides you can find online. Just experiment and you'll learn a lot.

Like I said its up to me just before FOS, but if I wait next year i could get a D70 at a cheaper cost. While owning a S9500 for the mean time.

s9500 for th emean time? you nuts? that's like 2x the cost in 2 years. Just wait longer if you're strap for cash.

I need to get a new digicam, because the compact camera I use from my Dad is a bit old for my liking now.

And if I wait, then a better version would come out. And why would I want to wait, when I have the cash around for one just lying about.

And when that version comes out, if you wait a bit longer there'll be a better version after that, for a lower price, and so on... if you use that logic you'd never buy any piece of technology.

Hey it's your money - but the logic in that statement escapes me - you're saying you're happy to effectively just throw your money away by buying the Fuji now and replacing it in a year's time?? Yet you're complaining about the cost of a DSLR??

People have been selling stuff at a later date, the plan is if I buy a S9500. Then I keep the S9500 as backup a year later, while owning a D70 insted of buying a D50 most likely.

And I buy tech, I even own a 26inch 1080i HDTV. And I am looking to maybe upgrade to 1080p around about 37inch or 40inchs next year, same is applying to PCI Express.

I will be waiting next year before moving to PCI Express, which includes me having a DX10 card in my next PC.

I honestly have no idea why you'd want a D70 over a D50 in the first place. The sensor and ISO performance of the D50 is so much better...

d70 is faster overall isn't it? When comparing nikon vs canon entry levels... people always speak of d70 vs 350d. Or maybe it's just cause it's the same megapixels

isn't the d70 6mp as well?!
i'd take at least a d70s, although i don't really think the few advantages that the d70 has over the 50 are really worth it.

or just take an olympus. :D

If I buy a D70 or D50 next year, then the S9500 will be a back up camera. Most photo people have 2 camera's, one for most shots and a backup.

ya tvr fan, but most people have a small point/shoot as their backup camera. I personally have the SD400 from Canon Powershot series as my "quick snap for ideas." But see why we are all trying to get you to buy the d50? We just think, if you're gonna dish out so much money, might as well spend it on the dSLR now rather than later. Seriosuly you wont regret it. I dont.

The automatic mode on the 350D is perfect for point and shoot. the D50 is very good too. You're about to buy the Fuji, which is as big as a real slr, functions ALMOST BUT NOT QUITE like an SLR and you are thinking of buying the SLR in a year. WHY MAN WHY!!!!

as for my previous post, I meant to say you pay for the camera here in US($550USD can get you the d50 + kit lens) then ship it to my place then I'll bring it to London with me. But of course you can't trust internet people. I genuinely am a good guy.

Okay back on topic. Get a D50, BerserkCatSplat will agree w/ the d50 choice.

It's funny how this forum has managed to get everyone to go into SLR photography, which is definitely a level above point and shoot.

But DSLR's can suffer from getting too must dust on the CCD, if I wait next year i could get a DSLR's with those motors which shake dust of better. At maybe D50 price.

If I get a S9500, and you all get a bit unhappy then I will laugh. I bet you lot are now thinking "Oh he is planning to get a S9500, just to annoy us", but like they say in the future compacts will be designed in the future to replace cameras with interchangeable lens.

And I quote from Cnet: S9500 an entry level DSLR slayer, just like the D50. If I wait till next year, I could get a D70 with a lens for ?450. Or a D50 with a lens for ?250 next year most likely.

Also in the UK we paying ?120-?150 more for the D50 then the US price.

lol... i guess there's no convincing you. go get your precious s9500. BE DAMNED!
