I'd like to know which concert that footage is from, and if possible if it's on DVD, thanks.

I thought the concert on that clip sounded really sucky, but that's just my opinion. The original version of that song sounds way better :)

trivia:

This song was written on the night of the Montreux pop festival (1967, the festival where Jimi Hendrix became really famous and where he burned his guitar)...

They were in their hotel bedroom in Geneva, when they saw a place at the other side of the lake burning...the concert hall where Frank Zappa was playing...hence the name: Smoke on the Water...

Why didn't they tell us this?? ;)

The song is Highway Star, but it sounds like you're talking about Smoke On The Water....

Yeah, Smoke on the Water is written about when the Montreux Casion burnt down. Thats why, but yeah your right about everythign happening, just wrong song.

Yeah I know the song is called highway star, i've heard the song since i was 12, i'm 18 now. I don't care if the live doesnt sound as good but I've always loved live versions because they're more 'real'.

Smoke on the Water :
we all came down to montreux
on the late geneva shoreline
to make records with a mobile (?)
we didnt have much time
frank zappa and the somethings..

Playing smoke on the water in many guitar stores is illegal now. it's overly played by newbie guitarists because it sounds ok and is pretty damn easy to play. Just because of that Deep Purple have to improvise with harmonics and bends.

The mobile part is because they had rented a mobile recording studio from the Rolling Stones. The last line is Frank Zappa and the Mothers (of Invention), you should know that as a musician. ;)
