Ford's Lincoln division is reviving its old numerical-naming system, but applying it to an all-new type of vehicle. The MkX, the Aviator, by another name, is one of the new breed of car-like crossover SUVs, well-equipped and with an emphasis on comfort rather than off-roading ability.

It's a sister model to the Ford Edge and both models are built on a version of the Mazda6 platform, also shared with the Fusion (the US-market saloon), Mercury Milan and Lincoln Zephyr saloons.

A five-seater, the MkX is equipped with just about everything you'd need - and then some. Features include stability control, adaptive headlights, a panoramic glass roof, heated and cooled eight-way adjustable seats, a 14-speaker audio system, full leather-and-wood trim and DVD navigation. The rear seats can be folded in a one-touch operation and at the touch of a switch.

It is powered by a new-generation 3.5-litre V6 engine, which will be widely used in many Ford ranges, with a new six-speed automatic transmission. It goes on sale in North America late this year, but will not be offered in Europe; it will be manufactured alongside the Edge in Oakville, Ontario.

Seems to be so dull that nobody could be bothered to write a reply

(Weren't cars of the Mk series exclusively coupes in the past?)

Yeah, the last Mark coupe was the VIII. Of course, the marketing yoinks could say that "oh it's a Mk., not a Mark, so evade evade evade." Pity really, as a new Lincoln coupe wouldn't be a bad addition to the model range IF they did it right. Interesting, though, how Lincoln has, among all the luxury brands, made the least effort to become sporty.

Well somehow they thought about it and forgot about it - I remember three or four years ago that there were rumours to introduce the Lincoln brand in Europe, first car should've been the Lincoln LS which was described as a sporty competitor to the 5 Series and E Class :)

Lincoln's new name change is horrid. Every time I see MK I somehow can't help but think "Martin Luther King Jr." Who obviously doesn't have much/anything to do with cars.

Aviator and Town Car were more memorable.

Oh FFS, what is that? You know what, with the amount of identical cars like this that are excreted by the car manufacturers in the US, to save money, why not just get one manufacturer to stamp them out, then just swap badges.

so a rebadged Ford Edge concept then?

so what does the front look like?
