Maserati has taken its pretty GranSport Spyder convertible to the US.
Like the coupe, this has the latest 4.2-litre V8 (400bhp and 333lb ft of torque) and revised, quicker-shifting transmission compared to the standard GT and Spyder. Its suspension has been lowered by 10mm and it has a distinctive, more aggressive front grille and spoiler, plus 19" wheels similar to those fitted on the Trofeo race cars. It goes on sale in March.
Maserati sold 2,100 cars in North America last year, a new record; 1,550 of these were Quattroporte saloons, the best-selling models in the $100,000-200,000 price-band in the US. Worldwide, Maserati sold over 5,600 cars in 2005, a 25% increase over 2004's sales figures; the US remains its largest market, taking nearly 40% of output, followed by Italy, the UK and Germany. The tiny company, a subsidiary of the Fiat Auto group now partnered in a division with Alfa Romeo, now sells in 56 countries on five continents.
