hey, sometimes i dont use up all the battery on my laptop but need to charge it. how do i make it discharge itself? i understnad the battery life could be less if u dont use up all the battery b4 charging it :p

its true but I don't think it matters much... I heard the biggest killer or Batt. life is plugging in the power to run the laptop whilst having a full batt plugged in as well... not sure if its true though... heard it from a salesman

that's only true for older Nickel-Cadmium based batteries, lithium batteries don't have this "memory" effect so you shouldn't worry about it. If they were affected the manufacturer would have provided a discharge function most probably

The battery life will get worse over time, but like Voodoo said the problem was much worse with nickel-cadmium batteries.

If you are concerned though, all you have to do to completely discharge the battery is go into your power options and turn off any of the automatic shut down or power saving features (Control Panel > Power Options). Then just unplug your notebook so it's running off of battery power and leave it running until it runs out of power and turns itself off. You may want to look in your manual for your notebook though - sometimes there is a discharge feature in the BIOS.

I worked for HP doing notebook technical support for the summer and we were always told to tell customers to do that if they complained of poor battery life. I'm not sure if it actually works or not though, but it doesn't hurt to try.

Hmmm most of the time i have the power adapter in and the battery is always in the laptop, and stays 100% charged.
Can that ruin the battery life?

Actually it might hurt. If battery is indeed Li-ion, it should not get empty ever. It's better to keep it charged than discharged. Pretty much the opposite of Ni-Cd or Ni-Mh.

EDIT: By "it" I ment discharging battery competely.

oh right cool.
So im safe then?

o good looks like i am not screwing myself over yet. my battery is quite impressive right now. 4 hours on save battery settings with a program i got. donno if it works on ur laptops but its called power4gear

on the topic of batteries, do u guys use rechargable ones or disposable one?

the rechargeable ones i have a brill. they recharge in less than 30 mins and last a long time. my dad got em free from GP as he did busines with them

I use Energizer NiMH rechargeables. I only use them in my MiniDisc player and discman, but they work great.

The DS, cellphone and laptops use Lithium rechargeable batteries, but we don't use standard-size rechargeables (AA, D, etc.).
