Does 5th Gear air with commercials?

If you own a TV or radio in the UK you have to pay a licensce fee (about ?120 a year, less for radio or a black and white set I think). This money pays for the main bbc stuff, meaning no adverts except for small adverts for other bbc services/programs between programs. It doesn't matter if you don't watch the BBC which is where some contraversy lies, but in all I support the fee. None of the money goes to other channels therefore they have to have adverts etc.

Oh, in the uk the adverts are rougly evry 15 minutes, therefore once during the simpsons, 3 times during an hour long show.

I think it's still better to pay an annual fee and get proper programs than be stuffed every 10-15 minutes for ads. BBC also are putting up a lot more channels than just 1 and 2 they had when i left.

Here we get adverts about every 10-minutes meaning two during a half hour program plus the ones either end. Like 5G i prefer only that one break in the middle but even the ones every 10-minutes are long enough for me to run to the fridge

Here's an example of how the adverts are shown from someone who's lived on both sides of the Atlantic (US now, UK formerly), using an episode of "Friends" to demonstrate:

As seen in the UK (total time elapsed:30 mins) :

Adverts.
Opening scene.
Opening credits.
First half of programme.
Adverts.
Second half of programme.
End credits.
Adverts.

As seen in the US (total time elapsed:30 mins) :

Adverts or end of previous programme.
Opening scene.
Opening credits.
Adverts.
1/3 of programme.
Adverts.
Second 1/3 of programme.
Adverts.
Last 1/3 of programme.
Adverts.
Closing credits.
Adverts or straight into next programme.

Same show, same amount of time but :censored: me the total amount of breaks here in the US is annoying...

I think one reason why Canadian and American TV networks place short commercials all over the place is so that the viewer sticks to the TV and doesn't just walk away. If there was one long commercial right in the middle of every show, people will just avoid this portion of the program and do something else, making sure to comeback back right after it's done. Companies who pay for these commercials want people to actually watch their advertisements so they place commercials in unpredictable timeslots.

It's annoying that sky (uk satellite tv) costs so freakin' much and you still get all the adverts! Adverts after the opening credits would be really annoying though.

BBC shows get shown on other tv channels as re-runs (called UK gold and stuff like that). So they always end up with stupid lengths so as to get adverts in every 15mins but not cut out any of the program. Unfortunately they cut stuff out of Top Gear re-runs to fit it into a 1 hour slot :bangin:

It's funny to watch 5th Gear on Speed and see how much more they hack the show up to fit in the extra ad breaks. They will go to break in the middle of a review and when they come back it will be a totally different segment of the show.
I've lived in the states for nearly 10 years now and it still pisses me off when they go to break right after the opening credits. When TiVo first came out it solved alot of those annoyances but the networks now screw with Tivo by making their shows 1hr 7 mins long and not telling the company that provides channel data to TiVo  Wankers!!!!!!

And as seen in Israel...
(Not Fifth Gear or Top Gear)
Adverts or end of previous programme.
Opening scene.
Adverts.
Opening credits.
Adverts.
1/6 of programme.
Adverts.
Second 1/6 of programme.
Adverts.
Last 1/6 of programme.
Adverts+more Adverts. the longest brake ever...the perfect time to grab some snacks...+ drinks
some more Adverts.
2/6 of the show...
guess what? time to adverts.
the end of the show...
Closing credits.
and adverts...
30 min. show turns into one hour show. thats the way it is...
yeah yeah...spelling problems..
 :D

I have noticed that recently the adverts on British tv do seem to be increasing ? Mainly i`m talking about that crap Sky but even on terrestrial tv the amount of adverts seem to be going up. Is it me?
You know it`s a common fact that in the advert break of a big event ie Football World Cup, electicity comsumption goes up!
Everyone goes off to the kitchen to make some tea.

yea, the electricity companies have to monitor the TV schedule specifically for that reason. They have to increase output during breaks and after programmes like Eastenders, where there will be many people putting the kettle on.

There's an interesting fact for ya :p
