Down the Pacific Coast I Go...

I don't think I could imagine that. I have never even lived in a small state. (Only lived in Nevada and CA.)

But I could imagine it wouldn't take long to be in another country if you live in either of those European states (they are pretty tiny).

The only problem is that I live in CA. For example, if we were to succeed we would have the 8th largest GDP in the World (so it's *almost* self sufficient in that sense. But it has too much debt so it kind of counteracts that argument too.)

*Edit* Are you just going straight to Vegas just for gambling or do you want to do like sight seeing? A lot of the Casinos have some pretty sweet shows (magic shows, dinner shows, zoos, museums, etc). And If you want to do shopping you could always go to Caesar's Palace (They have a giant mall in the casino).

We won't gamble much as we're on a tight budget and we're not very interested anyway! We mainly want to see the craziness of the city and visit some stuff :)

Ah well a lot of the casinos are quite good for doing that. You know, with having themes. I think if I remember right, it's either the Paris or the Venetian that has the Wax Museum. That was actually pretty cool to see when I saw it back when it first came out. @_@ And it's really cool just to see the themes of the casinos. The Luxor has IMAX ride things and a lot of other things too. I don't remember them being really expensive. (But times change too.)

And of course, every casino has to have a buffet. XD

COUNTRIES, They are seperate countries with seperate governements, independence, and huge cultural differences........Just like Canada , Mexico and the US are seperate countries, not states.
The European 'union' malarcy and its burocrats havent been able to irradicate them yet .......

seriously..... :p

"States" and "countries" are somewhat interchangeable in English, hence "nation-state". The use of "state" in the US was probably a leftover of the constitutional ratification days, where the individual states wanted autonomy and hence "statehood", rather than the "province-hood" that they feared they'd end up in. I realize that as a disgruntled Belgian this is a matter close to your heart, but even we Americans don't see Europe as one country. So chill :p.

Waitwait, I realise these sort of terms are never quite the same when they cross languages but I have never heard anyone in English say : "the state of France" .
'the nation of France' , and 'the country of France' sure, but not 'the state of France', weird that........
So I always assumed 'state' was another term for 'province', wich I quess would make minister-of-state a pretty lame jobtitle but anyway :p

As for the Americans not thinking were one country.....Sometimes I'm not so sure to be honest :p

It's not often used in direct reference to states like that, but more often in the form of "[continent] states", like "African states" or "Asian states", or when describing job titles like "head of state" or "chief of state" as you implied.

The general public is questionable, but I would hope you are safe with most of the people here.

English is a terribly ambiguous language. State can indeed refer to a sovereign nation though it is not usually used that way (and certainly does not mean that in reference to US States).

Oh yeah sorry about that confusion. I did mean country when I said state. I'm used to learning the history about countries and they can be referred sometimes as nation-states and sometimes my brain just shortens that. @_@

English is rather confusing, no wonder those who speak other languages state that it's such a hard language to learn.

Its ok, I realise it was a simple linguistic mistake, this sorta thing tends to hit a sensitive string when you're in country that's falling apart in the middle of a continent that seems to be obsessed with unification and looks at independance like its a bad thing......if we're not carefull we risk getting swallowed up by a naburing country....

I swear to God if that day comes I shall paint my face in warpaint and go William Wallace on the bastards...... <_<

anyway , enough thread derailment.....

I just arrived in Las Vegas after too great days in Los Angeles, so far everything is going just like planned, which is cool!

Just thought I'd give a small update.

I'm still beating myself up over the missed opportunity, really not much excuse to lose your patience like that at my age and let it ruin plans that took so long to make.

But, in hindsight, it was probably good that I didn't set out on my trip because since the middle of this past week I've been in bed and unable to move or sit properly because of this huge cyst thing on the base of my spine.

I don't feel any less wistful about the road trip a week on, but thinking about being in so much pain and discomfort in the car in the middle of nowhere makes me feel slightly less meh about how things played out.

I still want to do this road, I still longingly look at it through Street View every night... but the weather is getting colder and I've just lost my incentive what with the disappointment earlier this week and then becoming bedridden with a painful and disgusting cyst.

Glad you're enjoying yourself down there killpanda... well, actually, I'm jealous as all hell. But hey, enjoy yourself. :)

Hey, at least you could have afforded the mere thought of taking a trip like that, and you could have actually gone through with it if things hadn't gone awry. I, on the other hand, stare longingly at the maps and wish I could take a freaking road trip, just me and my car...but that's out of the question. :( And sorry to hear about your back, Shawn. I had a cyst once, on my wrist and it was horrible. Eventually it went away. I hope everything gets better for you, as I'm sure it will. :)

Oh man good luck with your cyst on your back. That would have been pretty hard to sit in your car and drive for a few hours a day with something like that interfering so maybe it was a sign to wait until you have more ability to do so.

Perhaps in the future when you can you should try again. The coastal areas are really pretty to drive along in the States. (I wish I could go on a trip, but I'm all busy with school. @_@)

That's true, but there seems to be so many more people who can entertain such thoughts and go through with them than not. Plus, what really hurt is that I did entertain the thought, allowed it to make me all happy and excited, hashed out all the logistics and was out the door before it went awry.

I think it would be easier to put it past me if it were never anything more than a dream.

Thanks. The cyst is done, once it stops oozing crap I'm good to go. :|

I don't think I'm mentally ready for another stab at the trip though. Also most of the hotels I wanted to stay at are booked up, somehow next week is a busier time than two weeks ago.

Sometimes you just have to do it and let the logistics work themselves out. I had a Canadian canoe trip where it rained all week, our hired guide was completely inexperienced, the guide company thought middle eastern food would be a good menu choice, when it wasn't raining there were eleven billion mosquitoes, the river was low and full of leeches, we had several mile plus portages (one up a 45 degree rock face), my sandals gave me blisters, and all the rapids were the shitty, wide, and on the final day we had to paddle 4 miles into 50 MPH headwinds on some shitty lake to get to a shitty shanty town. Probably one of my favorite trips ever, because in reality I got to BS in with a crazy bushwacking sex ed teacher/canoe guide, found out I like hummus and falafels and tabbouleh is disgusting, I survived crazy portages, got lost several times, and really honed my canoeing skills, and in the end I got to have milk in a bag and poutine with some crazy backcountry French Candians who had crafted a whole town in the style of Red & Green and this town is only accessible via canoe or train. I wont post the Walt Whitman quotes but it's what you make it...

Thanks, it's pretty awesome so far! I hope you'll find the time to do it again because it's really worth it :)

Yesterday we went to the Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon, both of them are mighty impressive! Sadly we arrived at the Canyon way too late so we only had about 1 hour of sun left... :'( Still amazingly big though!

Today we went to the Meteor Crater and to the Petrified Forest in Arizona, the weather wasn't that great but at least we dodged the rain! Rain that caught up with us while we were trying to go to New Mexico for a bit (it was close :-D)... It was so pouring with rain that we went back to Arizona, we're now 90 miles from Monument Valley and the good weather seems to be back, looks like tomorrow is going to be an awesome day :)

Oh and I just noticed that we're now on the Mountain Time Zone, which is cool!

We should be in Salt Lake City by Wednesday if everything goes well :)

Although I am not a known face around here. I am born and raised in Western Washington, I think you are going to miss a lot by just skipping Washington. It is the best state in the nation (I am biased I know). At least stop by Mt. Vernon for the Chuck Wagon. Pikes Place Market for a Piroshki. There are a million things to do around there.

Also, avoid the Seattle area around rush hour.

I appreciate the input... and I am stopping over in Washington, to get lunch and hit up a Walmart. :p

But honestly I just don't have the time. The way I've planned it it will already take me five nights on the road, and even in those five spots I doubt I'll have much time or energy to play a tourist given how many hours I'll have driven all alone to get there. Plus, I'm from BC, as nice as Washington is I'm sure it's a lot like BC, so I can always take a day trip down to Seattle later on when I'm back home.

I love piroshkis though, I'll keep that in mind in case I get hungry around Seattle. :)
