As some of you already know, I purchased my first home a couple of months ago. I was fortunate enough to find exactly what I was looking for (2 bed, 2 bath, garage, washer/dryer, great location) at a price I just couldn't resist. It was fairly... well-worn, so I updated just about everything. Here are some pics of the transformation. Please excuse the awful pictures and the mess; I'm still settling in.

I have officially sold my soul to the devil and become a... suburbanite. :p

That looks really good

Awesome work! You're making me feel lazy as hell, I haven't done anything to my new place. I can't even decide on paint colors.

That looks really thoughtfully done, spending money where you needed and keeping the things that were alright (fridge, stove, etc).

My "women's touch" is saying to, eventually, get a longer shower curtain (to the floor) and ditch the vertical blinds but none of that has to be done right away. It looks very nice.

What's with the ":p"!?! What are you trying to say, Derek? Huh!?!

:p

Thanks. :)

That's why I decided to do everything at once... eliminates procrastination.

Thanks. I'm alright with the blinds, but I may add some sort of window treatments in the future. I thought about the shower curtain as well, but this will do. :p

For sure, of course I still haven't received that tax credit, which is when I'll get the bigger stuff. In the mean time though, I could have gotten the paint all done, at the very least. The problem I'm facing is the color choices I used for my counters, tile floors, and carpet. Along with the oak cabinets, everything is my house is some shade of brown, so the neutral colors I was considering for the paint seem like a bad idea. So now I'm looking at certain southwestern shades of reds and/or greens, but I'm still undecided.

Maybe I should take a few pics and make a thread asking for color suggestions. :hmm:

Until I've received my grant, I'll momentarily forget how much I don't agree with Obama. :p

As far as paint goes, some people prefer that super neutral look, but it's not for me. Green seems to work in most rooms, but be careful with red; it can look very... strange. I went a bit bold in the bathroom with that barn door red color, but I think it worked out nicely. Whatever you do, pick straight from the catalog and completely ignore the paint swatches. For whatever reason, they were always off by a shade.

Where did you move to? Berwyn? Rolling Ghettos?

Wait; hold on. You are Polish, so it must be Oak Lawn.

Or Avondale. :p

I've actually escaped the stranglehold of Cook County entirely: Glendale Heights. The very suburb that inspired Billy Corgan to form the Pumpkins and bitch about how much life sucks. :p

BTW, "Avondale", as you call it, is starting to change and all the Polaks are moving. :(

I really like how you've done the kitchen but the colour schemes everywhere else looks really dated and 70s.

Dude this is awesome news! Proving to us Americans why Polish in the UK are the equivalent to Mexicans in the US! :tease:

Now I need to invite myself over with a bottle of Vodka

You know, now that I look at it, you're absolutely right. It's certainly not the look I was going for, but it's spot on, isn't it? How embarrassing. I'll be ripping the place apart tomorrow and hiring a team of interior designers; don't want to make this mistake again. Thank you for the invaluable info. :)

The way to win every Polak's heart. :p

Nothing "70's" about any of the colors. The pale greens that that blue/green sage color are very modern.

Did you replace the cabinets, or have them refaced?

What types of things did you do to compare stones? Some have resin treatments, some are unsealed, some are tested for radon, etc.
