Honda RA271?
 
BRM P15 1.5L V16 supercharged driven by Reg Parnell

Bugger, forgot the rear engined thing, I reckon Dogbert has it :(
 
Dogbert is, of course, right. The answer was the Honda RA271. Amazingly the car was raced only a few years after Honda had made it's first road car. The RA271 raced three times in 1964, each time with American, Ronnie Bucknum, at the wheel. The car used a 1.5l V12, which powered the race winning RA272 the following year.
