Just an opinion...avoid the Smith machine if possible because you'll work more "support" muscles with free weight. However starting on a Smith machine would be beneficial while developing sound technique.
If you promise not to grow a mustache, you could try http://www.amazon.co.uk/Solitary-Fitness-Charles-Bronson/dp/1844543099 (There's a newer version as well, apparently.)Actually, I need this too, but preferably without going to a gym because (a) I can't afford it and (b) I'm too shy. (Yes, honestly.)

Don't try to do too much in the beginning. I learned that the hard way when I started the gym this past November. My poor knees.
And so it should be, congrats! I'm fairly fit, but still can't do one push-up, even 'knee' pushups, so I have the greatest respect for those that can.... now I could do 10 easily! Little success, quite hilarious to some fit people out there but for me it was a huge fuckyeah.jpg moment!

I started heading to gym again regulary after holidays......and had a little success moment today when out of curiosity I tried pushups.....when I started in summer 2010 I couldn't do a single one (yes, that untrained, especially back muscles) and now I could do 10 easily!
