Why the hell are WMV and AVI's playing directly in Firefox instead of Windows Media Player?

It's since I've formatted and reinstalled everything.

When I click a link (for example in the video offers section or in any other website of course), Firefox just opens a new window with in full screen, that video, without any player controls whatsoever.

Please someone help me, because it drives me crazy and Google doesn't seem to know anything about it, they are too busy trying to take over the world

(by the way: getfirefox!)

Err that's weird - a setting somewhere in Media Player perhaps? I've been using Firefox for 1 1/2 years and I've never had this problem, though I long since ditched WMP for BS Player.

Edit: Just had a look in WMP - can't find any settings to control that behaviour. There's nothing in FF either.

Edit2: In Firefox, Tools>Options, the Download section - do you have any actions listed in the 'File Types' area? Mine's blank, but perhaps you have an action listed that is causing the behaviour.

Yep, could be it.

Try this -

https://addons.mozilla.org/extensio...tion=firefox&category=Popular&numpg=10&id=446

Download and install the plugin.

Once installed, click on 'Tools' and you will see an option called 'Mediaplayer connectivity' - click it. Make sure a tick is in front of items you want to launch in an external media player (eg Windows mediaplayer). Close the dialogue box and find some web media. Click on it. It will load the page and the media box on the page will display a little media 'play' sign - click it and the media will open and stream into an external media player (what ever you have assigned for the media type).

Then your home and hosed!

I found this useful for sorting out most Firefox / media related problems.

Another good program worth a look is - VLC Media player

http://videolan.org/vlc/

This also assists in providing a 'one size fits all' solution to media.

Good luck.
