It seems to me that Fifth Gear is doing their best to emulate Top Gear, and not entirely successfully, either.

Does anyone else share this view, or am I delusional?

Or maybe not...

Well, maybe you are a scitzofreniac... Or however you might want to write that goddamn word...

Aside from the delusional bit, I'd agree. Their cinematography has improved immensely, and Tom is doing quite a bit to add some comic relief. I think 5G is really stepping up the effort to rival TG...but it will never be the same. The charisma of TG's presenters and the style of the show is just too perfect of a combination...

I think the only reasons why people like TG better is because TG presenters are comical, TG has more air time per episode, and TG seems to have a much bigger budget.

IMO, I like FG because the presenters are/were professional race car drivers and can give me valuable feedback about handling. I am an amature racer so I can really understand what they're talking about.
But in TG, they are geared more towards the average driver.

Since the majority of people are "average driver" sorts, i think TG has the edge on demographic in terms of driving styles and methods.

I think 5G scores, though, in testing more cars that the "average driver" can afford.

5G would probably work alot better if they could go to 1 hr. They really try to cram so much into the 30 mins that individual segments are very short and don't go into much depth. JMHO

Yeah I think you're right. To come close to competing with TG they need a full hour. Not 20 minutes.

I also agree that FG is leaning toward becoming more TG-ish.
For example, recently they're doing more crazy competitions, like a Range Rover Sport vs a horse?!!! Or recording lap times for various cars around the same track to see what's faster. Also the cinematography has improved.

On the subject of 30min vs 60min, I also feel that 30min is too short. Actually, FG is really like 22min since they have commercials!!! TG will review a car for a good 10min or even more during a comparison.

Although I respect the opinions on cars from Tiff and Jason more than TG's crew, FG's reviews are too short so it seems they don't explain how a car feels as much as TG does. I am also an aspiring racing driver, so I value Tiff's opinion the most. But in the limited time he has to present, he just doesn't have enough time to describe how the car feels.

Its kinda like quality vs quantity. TG gives you more info, some of it useful, some of it useless. FG tries to cram as much useful info in a few minutes as possible. I gotta say quantity wins here and I prefer TG because if all I want to know is how fast a car is, I can look up stats in a magazine or on the web. I want to know how the car feels and behaves when its driven hard, and I think TG just does a better job conveying the driver's feelings. TG's dialogue uses analogies and comparisions to mundane things in order to describe a car's dynamics. Its like having a car discussion (or argument) with a friend over a drink. I like that.
