Food! [The thread that started this section]

Woot! Managed to pick up a hand coffee bean grinder that was on special for $13 dollars. Result!

I've never really been a coffee fan, the only thing coffee "related" that I like is tiramisu.

I don't usually photograph my culinary dabblings, but I just happened to have the camera sitting on the table today. This is my saut?ed halibut with a variety of seasoning ranging from dill weed to the token curry powder I can't live without. The result was absolutely fantastic. I'll admit though, the presentation is a bit weak, but I was trying to make do with what I had on hand.

Damn, you noticed! :p I know the rules, but it looked terribly plain.

Rule of thumb: don't put stuff on a plate that you can't eat (whole peppercorns) ;)

What? You mean you DON'T eat whole peppercorns?

I guess there's technically nothing wrong with eating whole peppercorns, but it doesn't make any sense to me.

Unless you grind it there is no real taste to it, it's just the scent I think. And when you inevitably bite into the peppercorn the flavour is too overpowering with the food. So it makes sense to grind them up.

Different matter if it's cooked like in some sort of peppercorn steak.

Too overwhelming on your pallate. Cant taste anything else then. The pepper grinder was invented for a very good reason... :)

Apologies for the extremely LQ cellphone pictures, but I realized I had to actually make my own lunch instead of buying from outside :p, so I forgot to recharge my camera battery in the morning.

I made veggie quesadillas. Veggie because I'm vegetarian.

This is what i used to make the Kay-sa-dee-yas:

Ingredients:

Thaw soy crumbles on hot saute pan, and cut bell peppers and red onions while waiting. Get all other ingredients ready.

Add a little bit of oil (olive, canola, human, it doesn't matter) and toss in peppers and onions.

Add a tiny bit of chili powder, turmeric, asafoetida (aka hing) powder, stir.

Cook while it's still freaking edible, turn down the heat if necessary to prevent burning down the building.

This is what the mix should look like:

Take store-bought tortillas, put em on a skillet.

Take some shredded cheese and add to one of the halves of the tortilla.

Add the mixture once the cheese has shown evidence of meltage.

Fold over, put it in a plate, and eat.

Apologies for lack of pictures on the last few steps. I ate all my kweyzadillaz before I was able to take a picture . Should be self-evident though.

You may notice some weird green vegetable in there. I just added some leftover bitter melon that my mom made the previous night for dinner. Just added it at the end since it was already cooked and just needed to be warmed.

If you don't know what bitter melon is, here's the wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitter_melon

We call it Paavakay in Tamil Nadu.

Peace and enjoy

Has anyone tried any of the deathsauces yet? I'm keen on trying some since a store in melbourne just got a shipment in.

I frequently buy Megadeath (500000 scoville - Tabasco sauce is 2500-5000) and have recently ordered 4 bottles of Ultradeath (1 mil scoville). I usually put 4 drops of it in a kebab (my record is 10).

Why would anyone want hot sauce that's five hundred times hotter than Tabasco? You won't even taste anything other than burning.

The more hot food you eat, the more used you get to it, so if you want it to burn along with the flavour you have to keep cranking up the heat. I still get every flavour nouance as I would if I didn't add the sauce, even more so because of the sauce. It's quite a nice mix of vinegar, tomato and the all important peppery flavour.

EDIT: I can chug Tabasco sauce if I wanted to. But that's just pure vinegar, it tastes vile.

Cause you use tiny ammounts so its flavour gets lost in the whole dish. I'd need a bottle a plate. Then it just overwhelms it. >_<
