For all of you who understand "sarcasm" and humour

I wish I spoke German.

The engines on the B-17s stuck out too far.

Some of the people commenting the clip have translated it...

BTW: dude you're a geek! :p

Very good, you win a cookie.

WWII and Military Hardware is kind of a hobby of mine. For example, I can tell you that the new F-35 engine puts out 40,000 lbs of thrust. That's like getting hit by 573 Kirstie Alleys if you're blocking the door of a bakery.

 "cartoony" is a nice description. I love Moers' way of taking the piss out of any subject.

the chorus is so goddamn catchy.

HAHA... man that was a good laugh.

Blind_Io I am also a WWII buff. I have tons of books on the planes, and of specific events... well let us say that my books are either Guiness Book of Records, or something to do with WWII. Nice eye on the Flying Fortress, I have the Memphis Belle movie and just love that bomber (also have a large scale model of it).

I've been fortunate to actually be aboard a couple different B-17s, a B-24 and even FiFi, the B-29. I could never afford to take a flight, but one of these days that will change.

The B-17 is my favorite and I think most photogenic bomber of the war - possibly ever. After that comes the B-58 Hustler - now that's a beautiful aircraft!

Might I humbly disagree... aesthetically, the B-17 was a Countach of a bomber, with too many sticky-out bits (in this case, guns) by the time the B-17G came around. In my eye, the Mitsubishi G4M Betty was prettier; say what you will about its flammability, but that was an elegant bomber. If the B-17 was a Lambo (or more of a Mercedes, considering its toughness), the G4M was more of an Alfa.

(yet another WWII air-geek comes out of the woodwork :p )

No no, you gotta love the Junkers JU390. 6 engines!

Oh come now, bringing up German one-offs is cheating :p

Dodgy prototypes that never reached production let alone areial bombardment don't count. Jap bombers that had no infulance on the out come of the war don't count either. The best bomber from WWII without question.

Not as pretty as the B-17 debatable, packed a larger punch not open for debate. Next it will P-51 over Spitfire

All those "Sticky out bits" is what makes the B-17 a visually interesting and photogenic aircraft. Even with all of those big guns it still looked graceful. Oh, and it shot down more German fighters than Allied fighter cover for the first year of operation. (I think it was the first year)

Oh, as for the P-51D vs Spitfire. The P-51 has a better power to weight ratio, better time-to-climb, better wing loading, heavier armament, higher top speed and higher operational ceiling, and better cockpit visibility.

In a fight the P-51 would win.

Which Spitfire mark though? The later Spitfires had the same bubble canopy as the Mustang, the newer Griffon (as opposed to the Mustang's Merlin) engine, higher Mach tolerances in power dives thanks to the elliptical wing, and with 4 20mm cannon, comparable, if not superior armament.

And now for something completely different, is the Spitfire one of the most overrated fighters of WWII? I just spouted off about its technical marvel, so I'm not saying it's a crap fighter, but of all the major WWII single-seat fighters it did the least. (Disclaimer: this is not meant to be comprehensive, exhaustive, scholarly, or ground-breaking. It's mostly a devil's advocate thing and an idea to chew on) Let's list the contenders:

Britain:
Hawker Hurricane: It, not the Spitfire, won the Battle of Britain, and once the Spitfire came on the scene in enough numbers all was left to hold down the fort, ie defend against further daylight German incursion, which either never happened (bombers) or beat them back (Fw-190).

Germany:
Messerschmidt Me-109: Singlehandedly established air superiority on both European fronts pre-1943, and thanks to fuel injection could pull some nasty tricks on the Spitfire in the Battle of Britain
Focke-Wulf Fw-190: Broke the Spitfire when it first came out. 'Nuff said.

USA:
P-38 Lightning: Shot down Yamamoto.
P-40 Warkhawk: Tough and reliable, if nothing more.
P-47 Thunderbolt: Almost a good escort fighter, great ground attack and toughness.
P-51: Established Allied air superiority over Europe.
F4F Wildcat: Held the line against the nimbler and faster Zero.
F6F Hellcat: Broke the Zero.
F4U Corsair: Might be almost as overrated as the Spitfire, considering it came late after the 'cats did the initial braking.

Japan:
Mitsubishi Zero: Biggest shock to Allies evar. Yeah, it never got updated, but it made a helluva impact early on

In this background, what did the Spitfire do? It might've been technically superior in many ways, but it was a daylight interceptor and dogfighter without that much range. Thus, it was stuck in British and northern French airspace for most of its life, and once Normandy happened, superior longer-range fighters were there to fill the gaps. My point is that it was not a war-(or even battle-)winner, nor a massive groundbreaker. It was a sweet plane, just not a great one. Your retorts please. :p

Edit: Mods, feel free to split the aircraft discussion into a separate thread; this is one heluva jack.
