Sierra RS500

Available :- 1987

Group A racing regulations of that time allowed manufacturers to build an evolution model of a homologated car. The amount of evolution cars that had to be sold for public use was at least 10% of the overall model production which made 500. Because of this, Ford had already planned to put these 500 original Sierra Cosworths in storage when the RS Cosworth was in the planning stage.

Produced by Tickford for Ford, the RS500 was to be entered into the Touring Car championship, the plan by Ford Motorsport was to go out and beat the Rover Vitesee that were dominating the series at the time.

Modification were made to the standard spec RS Cosworth, that made the RS500 a nice road but would allow for a fabulous race car.

The cd factor of the 500 made it a fraction slower than the standard RS Cosworth, this was due to the additional aerodynamic aids applied to the 500 (lower front bumper splitter, lower boot spoiler & gurney strip of the main rear spoiler) . All in all made the car much more stable at very high speeds (150mph +) need for the races.

Stats / Spec's:-

Original cost : ?19950
produced: 1987
Homologation : 1987 500 off
Engine : 1993cc 16v Twin OHC Ford Cosworth YBD, Stronger cylinder block.
Garrett T4 turbocharger.
Larger intercooler.
Second fuel injection rail (Extra 4 injectors were fitted, but weren't functioning in road trim). 8 in total.
Power : 224bhp @ 6000rpm
Modified rear suspension mounting points with alternative pick-up points for trailing arms.
15 x 7 Alloy wheels
Fog lamps removed & replace with brake cooling ducts, some owners opted to has fog lamps fitted.
Revised Front bumper for better air flow into the engine bay.
Finish : 392 Black, 56 in White including 4 Prototypes & 52 in Moonstone Blue

Your opinions please... Is it just a glorified family transport or the ultimate 80s hot hatch...? Discuss...

awesome car, no doubt about it

but what's the use of 2 rows of injectors?

I've got a Sierra xr4x4 2.8. Does anyone know how much the Cosworths differs from my car? Except for the extra hp and the tuned suspension?

bc turbo cars crave fuel or else it goes boom.

like this car a lot. rwd, turbo, irs. its a good thing ford did. btw anyone know the difference between this and a merkur xr4ti?

I always loved this car.. It's a Swiss Army knife.... You can take it to the touring one day and in the next day, to a stage in a rally

Too bad we didn't get the Cosworth version here

The Cosworths are rwd and has a 2-litre turbocharged 4 cylinder engine, 5-speed 'box, limited slip diff, 3-door combicoupe only and the ironingboard spoiler... (Up to the Saloons...)

Aren't the available with 4wd as well? And what gearbox is it? The one with the reverse gear besides the first, or beneath the fifth?

That's just the 4door saloon cars. The gearbox is a Borg Warner of some sort, same as a Mustang I guess but with some modifications to handle the high rpm...

Could this be one of those? http://www.fastfords.org.uk/sierra/edd3dr5.jpg
Looks like the kinda gearbox that our Scorpio has got, wich I think is one of the best gearboxes I've ever used (not that I've tried many, but still). Light and smooth, but still very precise...

You can see it on these two pics, it has injectors on both sides of the inlet manifold...
