Porsche has confirmed that it is to produce a hybrid petrol-electric version of its Cayenne SUV, which will go into production by the end of the decade. Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking said at the Frankfurt Motor Show that the hybrid Cayenne will be around 15percent more fuel-efficient than its petrol-only equivalent, whilst having its performance uncompromised. It will be a full hybrid, with an electric motor which can drive the car independently; the powertrain system will be similar to that used in the hybrid Audi Q7 (also confirmed for launch, in 2008). A hybrid Volkswagen Touareg is likely by 2010 as well.

Wiedeking also said that Porsche sales and revenue reached record levels again for the last financial year. In the year ending July 31st, it saw revenue rise by 6.8percent and sales rise by 15percent, with 88,379 vehicles sold worldwide. Sales of the recently-revised Boxster were up 38.7percent, sales of the 911 rose by 17.4percent and Cayenne sales rose by 4.9percent to nearly 42,000. Porsche expects further growth following the launch of the Cayman S coupe - unveiled in Frankfurt this week - and the growing variety of new-generation 911 models to choose from.

Which of course means we're stuck with the Cayenne for the rest of this decade and long into the next :(

Ironically enough, Ferdinard Porsche effectively invented the first hybrid, and now his beloved company's buying that tech from the Japanese.

Feel that spin? It's his body hitting 7,000 RPM...

Porsche Sr. had nothing to do with any car bearing the Porsche name though. The Porsche marquee was all Ferry Jr, who actually was highly disapproving of his father and his father's business practices. Ferdinand did the majority of his work for Austro-Daimler and Mercedes.
