Ssangyong is displaying a new diesel hybrid chassis and drivetrain.
The system combines a 2.7-litre, five-cylinder diesel engine (160bhp) with an electric motor delivering the equivalent of 46bhp, and is said to give a 30% improvement in fuel efficiency over that of the diesel engine alone, and a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. A parallel hybrid system, it allows for running in fully-electric mode at speeds of up to 30kph.
First Ssangyong model to be offered with this powertrain will be the 2010 Kyron; Ssangyong is also planning to sell the technology to other manufacturers, and says that companies including Peugeot-Citroen are interested.
The announcement of this hybrid is part of a major offensive by the Korean company, which recently announced its relaunch in the UK with a refreshed line-up (Kyron and Rexton 4x4s, plus Rodius MPV) and new distribution/dealer network.
