yup, I've put it on an oven...
APO.jpg

it offers:
1:2 Macro Magnify
450mm of tele (as a Nikonian)
APO and DG coating
and it works a hell lot better than the Nikkor lenses(even 70-300D I doubt)

and it cost less than 100 quid BRAND NEW!!
PS.since it is a Japanese parallel import...

Holy crap!

less than 100? 100 what?

Good looking lens, do you have any pictures from it yet? I'm looking for an inexpensive telephoto, and this might fit the bill. How fast is the AF?

not very.

cheap telephotos are only good in daylight, or at night with a tripod. low-light situations with cheap telephotos are a nightmare to capture, even with the ISO cranked all the way up. (i have a "cheap telephoto)

the next telephoto i'm aiming for is the 80-200mm Nikkor ED AF-D lens. currently one of the fastest telephotos nikon has on the market, but also $1000 ish new..

Yeah, I wasn't expecting great low-light performance out of any telephoto under a grand. I was thinking more along the lines of something to use for daytime sporting events, like autocrosses. I'm just kicking the tires of equipment right now, trying to figure out the best telephoto to pair with the 18-55 DX Nikon kit lens.

A little while back I was searching for a lens to fit the same application. I had a 18-55 DX lens that came with my D50, and I wanted a telephoto to use for action shots since I like to attend a lot of auto racing events. I decided on the Nikon 70-210mm f/4-5.6 AF-D. The autofocus really is one of the fastest I've seen for the money. The lens quality and the quality of the images it produces are excellent. I haven't tried using it in any low-light situations yet, but like you said, I don't really expect to use it in that way.

I'm sorry but that lens isn't what you'd call excellent or good. you basically get what you pay for. In photography, there isn't a "good and cheap" solution as people might expect.

As whoster said, slow af and works only in the daytime.
In my case, I do (night)club shooting regularly and I can't imagine taking that thing along with me, even with my 550EX attached. I haven't got a single shot with it that I'm happy or even satisfied with.

This lens can only be used as a temporary solution to get them telephoto shots if at all.

under a grand, probably the best bet anyone has for a good telephoto is the Sigma 70-200mm EX HSM lens...

then again you COULD pick up a used 80-200mm ED AF-D Nikkor for the same price so iono.

right now i'm suffering with a Tamron 28-300mm i picked up (cuz it was only $150) but it's pretty much useless indoors or once the sun goes down. trying to balance shooting pool too much and photography at the same time. (bought new cuesticks...bye bye $200)
