GTA IV (PC)

I dunno why, but I feel like GTA works best in an American setting... it might work elsewhere, but for some reason I can't explain I feel it would lose a certain part of its appeal.

I have to say the same, also the style of GTA has been excellent, whether it is advertisements, radios, billboards..

How about time for a totally new city in a totally new setting? Think of the possibilities in places such as in Eastern Europe, Tokyo, Hong Kong, or even Dubai, with new and original characters.

As much as I'd like to see VC or SA again (especially the former), it'll take more than a new engine and some coats of paint to make it worthwhile.

Well they can't exactly introduce any non-american city. Dubai would be very cool, as well as Hong Kong, but:
1. All the radio would be kinda fake, if you're in Tokyo,Paris or HK you really don't expect 10 stations in english (and only them).
2. They won't be able to put in all their billboards, ads, funny fake street names, fake tv-shows, radio references, DJ jokes and so on.
3. Dubai, HK and SA are too big, and in case with SA they at least have a ready-made city planned which only needs new paint and high res textures, in case of completely new city they need to create the thing from scratch and that will take another two years.

A problem with SA it was overpacked. So they will spend enormous amount of time redrawing and redecorating all the 3 towns and the countryside, but with new physics and stuff they probably won't put in Harrier, 747, and therefore a parashute as they can't even figure out how to put rockets and target lock on a simple police helicopter.

The only thing not quite good in GTA 4 (except for bugs and performance issues) is a storyline. It's a bit linear and missions are almost the same, also for some reason they've removed funny missions (micro cars, micro helicopters with explosives etc). Also the reputation thing as in "take a person to the activity place" is fun at first, but after you have alsmot all characters at "friend" status, you get 10 consecutive calls to take them wherever and it gets annoying.

Good thing about VC it's modest in size, so they can redraw it and proceed with better storyline and new features. And not necessarily it should be in the 80s, modern days will work even better. You got supercars, expensive boats, the whole porn industry, corrupt governors/senators/police, economic crysis and a lot more from this years actual news to work with.

Also if you look at the timing, the first DLC for GTA 4 on 360 will be available early next year, the 2nd DLC pack will be probably ready by mid summer, so alsmot exactly a year from today they will have to release a 2nd installement of GTA 4 for all platforms, and that's not much time to work with.

Well, it could take place in England or some other English-speaking locale. How about Toronto? Or maybe Saint John.

I said it before, and I'll say it again for the sake of concurrence - I'd love for VC to be redone on the new engine. The American culture in indispensable to these games... I'm still impressed by how well done Liberty City is in GTA IV. It's so detailed, and so cute in some ways. It's like a living, breathing city complete with local accents and behaviour. Like where else in the world are you going to find a black preacher telling you things like "You're living in a worlda pain, yessir!"

I'm about 36 percent through the whole thing, it's so damn fun this game. I just go the third safehouse from Roman, wonder how he could afford it? I have a feeling I'll find out soon enough. :shifty:

Where do you guys get this idea of R* just recreating the floor plan of VC for a possible GTA4 Vice City? The only reason the original was small was the limited potential of the original game engine. Now that they've got a better one, the city would be larger.

Also, Vice City would absolutely need to be set in the 80's. After all what made the game so awesome was that it was basically Miami Vice with some names changed and a new perspective. That wouldn't work in a modern day setting.

Does anybody if the illegal versions of this can be played in a LAN? Xmas LAN is coming up, and most of the Dudes there don't really play games more than once a year, if you catch my drift...

Yeah, get a taxi ride from his guys. It ain't no shitbox anymore!

Yeah, the Indian dude is now sporting an Escalade Cavalcade... though he still complains about Roman.

Damn it, I was playing around with the handling files seeing what is possible, and now the game doesn't load... Guess I should of backed it up, time for another long ass install unless someone is willing to share their handling file. Anyway, it all seems similar to GTA San Andreas in terms of modding values, not sure about car models yet.

It wasn't limited at all. The first GTA 3 (Liberty City) was bigger than VC, and a year after VC release we got SA which was probably 10 times bigger and 20 times more packed with stuff.

The reason VC stacks out is they worked harder on the story, characters and atmoshpere, something that was almost completely missing from SA, and is only partially back to Gta 4 (probably cause of all the planned DLCs).

For me SA was too much. 7 or 8 types of collectables (unlockables), 3-town map, every possible air/ground/water vehicle, character customization, car upgrades, they probably had a suggestion box and then as the swan song for the final "original" game of the 3rd series decided to implement all the ideas. To me it looked like a bad MMORPG, when the put you in the middle of a field with 125 things you can do, and none of them makes sence or is in any way connected to the story or anything else. R* completely lost me with Harrier and a 747.

Just installed it an tried to play it. But it gave me the rmn40 error, it turns out I need XP SP3 to play this. But SP3 won't install on my machine for some reason. So basically, I can't play it. Rockstar can go fuck themselves. There's no way I'll install a new OS just for this game. Sometimes I really feel like building this comp was a mistake. I should've gotten a pre-modded Xbox360 and be done with it.

Don't blame Rockstar because you can't update your machine to SP3 that was released way back in the spring. The sys reqs state you need Vista SP1 or XP SP3.

You know what the problem is here? A few people had issues running the game (most of them because of the ATI issue), and everyone else is just using this as an opportunity to bitch and moan for no valid reason.

I don't see how R* is to blame because you can't get SP3.

SP3 offer nothing over SP2. I bet in a few months a cracking group will be able to make this game run on SP2. There are still MILLIONS of people running on XP SP2. They are so lazy that they don't even include compatibility for SP2. So yeah, I say fuck them!

Nope, still not their fault.

Keeping your computer reasonably up to date is a completely understandable requirement. Who the hell cares if SP3 offers nothing over SP2? Plus, I'm sure that's not entirely true.

Edit: Wikipedia says "A total of 1,174 fixes have been included in SP3." And it sounds to me like you just downloaded this game, so you really have no cause for complaints.

Yep, I'm uninstalling it right now. Not worth the trouble, I'll probably get an Xbox360 or PS3 later on anyways.

I'm glad you guys had that conversation.

PS. I'm running it on Vista on an average Dell notebook and I'm Loving it :)

I'm glad as well... people like me who are satisfied enough with the product need to help dispel some of the myths about this game.

Does anyone know if Games for Windows Live saves your games on their servers?

I looked it up but found nothing. Usually I know which folder to backup but I'm not sure if there's just the one with this game...?

Have been playing for quite a few days. Awesome game, but not good if you have a mid-range com and hate choppy gameplay.

Btw, anyone knows how to cure the problem of excessive body roll?

Drive better cars (Roman's taxi is horrible for rolling).

Don't drive high centre-of-gravity cars (4x4s and SUVs).

Drive more modern-looking cars.

And if worst comes to worst, slow down.

OR just drive the Banshee, best handling car evar! I don't get why the uranus has been made so ugly and average, it was a good sports car in previous renditions
