Has Top Gear done anything on or about the Mercedes ML?

Here's a thought: For every Corvette I see on the road (from any model year), I see three brand new Merc SLs. That should tell you something: as cheap as the Corvette is, it sucks.

I think Jeremy is deity, so he can't be wrong. If he slags a car, then it must be bad. I'm a fanboy.

I was always under the impression that the Ford line of pick-ups was the toughest, I've seen alot of old ones running around perfectly today.

For what a pick-up does, ignoring the interior, looks, comfort, etc., the power is the most important thing. The Ford can haul over 3000lbs more than the Tacoma. That's alot. Don't get me wrong, the Tacoma looks damn great for a pick-up, and Toyota's are definately proven, but in sheer size and power, American pick-ups can't be beaten.

Not to mention, if I did have a Titan or a Tacoma, I sure as hell wouldn't treat it the same way if I had a Ram, Sierra, or an F-150. That whole tough American pick-up image lingers on in my head, I guess.

Same reason Porsche insists on keeping the engine in the 911 in the wrong place -- tradition and character.

Engine in the wrong place? Not really.

Come on, the Boxster is mid-engined, the 911 should have been when they retired the 993.

Using your logic, the Honda Civic must be a kick-ass car!

I thought you were comparing the 911 to a corvette, and in essence suggesting that the front of the car is the proper place for the engine. Yes, Mid-engine is ideal.

can somone please answer the ACTUAL thread question?
which episode did top gear review the new merc ML, i remember watchin it a while back but would like to know the specific season and episode.
thanks

Top Gear never reviewed the ML, not in the new series at least.

And it IS a crap car, my family owned one a little while ago. At the time I wasn't old enough to drive, but I was old enough to know it was slow and poorly built. The new ML is much better, but still lacking. Though many magazine testers have said they preferred the new ML63 to the Porsche Cayenne Turbo; it's better looking, quicker and more nimble.

Now what I don't like is the GL. I can't shake the feeling that they came up with it over pints on a Thursday night or something. "Americans like big stuff, so why don't we build something really big?"

edit: this is a damn old topic! But at least I wasn't the one who bumped it.

hmm ive driven the old ML320 b4. (mama's car)
to be honest, i like it.

it doesnt look great, but it sure eats my heart over time.
and the engine in the 320 is powerfull enought to pull this heavy thing....for moms.

i have not driven any other SUVs b4, but ride in some b4... comparing the ride quality of the old ML and the old Lexus RX (friend's car).... i like the ML better. the ML hadles the bumps better than the Lexus... probably because Lexus uses sedan chassis on a SUV...

the X5, i dont know.... but it's too expansive lol...

the build quality of the merc (electronics), isnt so great, but the whole thing is rigid.
at least it feels like a SUV not a raised sedan...
and it does pull better than the Landcruiser (friend's car) also... maybe because of a stronger engine... and the fuel economy is way better (for the ML320)....

the new ML does look much much better! i like it instantly when it was out...
overall i do think the ML is a good car.... not great, but i dont think it is as bad as some describes...

by the way, i owned a 03 Celica GTS for 3 years...
now im driving a 00 E320 Avantagrade (however u spell that word)...

Top Gear has never reviewed the new ML. Neither has Fifth Gear. Fifth Gear has reviewed the old ML however.

I read/heard somewhere that Tiff has an old one as his family load lugger, like Clarkson has a Volvo XC90.
Yep thats true - Tiff has the old one. He also has the old M5. I think he's the type of guy who doesn't really sell his cars and good on him. I always rekon if your well off, your better off keeping the cars than copping the depreciation.

btw: Tiff did test the new M-Class in a "60-second" review or something. It was the last episode of the last series. Very short review....generally good with the only problem being the lack of 7 seat option.

For every Porsche (any year, any model) I see on the road, I see 3 Corvette C6's. That should tell you something... or not.
