hey guys, im new here and just wanna say i think the site is awesome! im new to the whole torrent thing also and im having a prob. my downloads are mostly staying at 0 kb/s and when they're active are usually aroung 5kb/s. occaisionally they spike but still very slow. is this normal and is there anything i can do to increase d/l speed? thanks in advance

Firstly, download uTorrent. Most would agree that its the best BT client.

What connection do you have btw?

The aim is to upload as much as you can so that your download gains priority, thus faster speeds. If your U/L speed exceeds your D/L speed, impose an U/L limit in the Network Options. If you tell me your connection, I can give you a good figure to limit your uploads to.

I assume you have a broadband connection. Do you get a green light in your torrent program?

yeah, im running on cable. im using bittorrent currently and i dont see any green light. if you tell me exactly what your lookin for i will find it. i did the "port forwarding" and that helped a bit. all of them seem to be connecting now. average of about 7kb/s peak of about 20kb/s. at least their connecting now. and i really would like to know what to set upload at. thanks again guys!

I would move to a better BT client, such as uTorrent. You will have way more control over the settings. You may need to switch to a different port if your ISP is attempting to throttle down BT traffic.

so the bt client will make that much of a difference? do you have a link for utorrent? what d/l speeds should i typically be looking at?

The download speeds all depend on how fast other people are uploading to you. If your conencted to people that aren't shaing, then your download speed won't be good no matter how much bandwidth you have. So don't always expect to see great download speeds.
