If this article is anything to go by the successor to the S2000 will be keeping a front engine, rear wheel drive layout and is touted as a faster alternative to the Mazda MX-5. Base model S2000 is rumored to have a 180bhp turbocharged 4 cylinder, details of a hair raising Type-R are scarce with no credibility :lol:

The renders clearly take inspiration from the NSX, personally I like the aggressive lines.

I approve. How well it will sell is another matter but if they pitch it at the right price point it should find a following. Won't look anything like those renders of course. :p

Looks good, but unless it weighs less than the previous S2000, a 180bhp engine won't cut it.
See how the RX-7->RX-8 went.

Well turbo will make a difference, insofar that it is very easy to goad more power out of them with a simple chip, also it would finally have some torque. Though I'm not sure how a turbo engine would really work for that kind of car, might end up too peaky.

We all have to accept that with tightening emissions legislation having a turbo with become a matter of course.

It's been 10+ years since Honda released F20C and it's marvelous 120+ horsepower/Liter. With today's current technology, Honda could introduce an engine variant/evolution with substantial increases in power. Increase the displacement to 2.5 Liters (8000 r.p.m.+), an increased compression ratio 12.5:1, direct injection, more advanced variable valve technology, and other technologies; and Honda could produce an engine with the same magic but with 340 horsepower. If the weight could be kept under 3000lbs, which could be done if they offered a strictly hard top variant, and I could see real potential.

Damn, I hope so. Those renders look pretty good too, though the real thing will probably be hideous. If it ever gets made.

...so this will go up against the Fiat 124 Spider rather than the Miata.

The S2000 was always a step above the Miata in terms of power.

The old motors made ~230 hp and personally I thought the old cars and motors were quite brilliant. I would own an S2000 much sooner than any Miata for 2 reasons: 1. I fit. 2. Dem revs.

Well, me too, but then again the S2000 was much more performance oriented so it's a no-brainer.

Honda was smart enough to make it a convertible, Toyota/Subaru shot themselves in the foot by making a coup.

And weight and twitchiness.

Wasn't the twitchiness gone with AP2 (AP1.2 in Europe) with VSA, slower steering and better control arms? Or something like that

QFT. I've said it before but if they had priced the thing correctly and done the ragtop version they could have stolen a march on Mazda and the long overdue ND. As it is there is still only one affordable two seat roadster available.

Sales numbers do not agree.

Of course, then there's the elephant in the room when talking about this market segment...
