How do I remove a stripped screw?

Long story short, a friend on mine screwed in a DVD burner and now has to get it out but didn't have the right sized screw driver and tried to do it with the ones she had.

Consequently the screw has been hollowed up in the middle too much for the correct screw driver to turn the screw. It catches a little, but just slips around.

I am by no means an expert in tools so I thought I would ask what can be done to remove the pesky screw.

the last time I had a problem... I drilled the screw in till the spiral part of the screw, then put it on reverse mode and it should have enough grip to pull it out.

Or if the screw isn't that badly wrecked, you can just find a drillhead that is a tiny bit bigger than the head and run it on reverse mode

this would be called stripping the screw

The drill idea should work, but if not try taking a Dremel with one of the cutting discs and cut the head off then pound the screw out. :bangin:

BTW you might need to re tap the hole

hope it works for ya :D

So how would that be done?

Remember I said I'm not a tool kinda guy. The only real experience I have with drills etc was way back in year 10 tech class.

A friend of mine suggested drilling etc. but I wasn't sure if that was a good idea with a DVD burner.

Could you get a rachet or something to go around the screw and turn it?

I think it'll just slip... Janus, you don't have to go full on speed with the drill, just do it slowly... it should come out, as long as you set the direction to reverse, you should be safe ;)

there are also screw extracters that work in the same principle as the drilling, but will bite to the screw in reverse, pulling it out easier. check for something like that.

my first taught was also in the direction of those things, but i doubt they will grip on DVD player screws. i can imagine them to be pretty small

true, but i think that there could be extractors that small too. not sure, check the sears website above.

You could also try to get a small saw or file, cut a slit/groove in the head and use a flat head screwdriver to get it out.

High grip pliers from the hardware store = $7.50

Getting the screw out for my girlfriend to make her happy so I can get a screw = Priceless!

Heh, was just gonna suggest that.

Oh, and tell her to not tighten them so much next time. It's just holding in a DVD burner, not holding the space shuttle together. :p

Actually I put the screw in.

But she was the one who tried to remove it with the 3 crappy screw drivers she has and buggered it up. :p
