I do a lot of GT driving, and was wondering if anybody has taken the RX8 on a good long trip?

I'm just wondering if the engine becomes a bit stressful on long motorway journies, what with its 9k rpm redline.

I'm looking for a good GT car in that price range... also looking at the 350Z but the interior in the Z isn't exactly... posh.

hmm well rotary isn't the most reliable engine in the world :p duno about the RX-8 much. Hmm you can get a second hand Z3 or something for the same amount. Or the Infiniti G35 coupe, but its probably just like the 350Z with more toys.
Just search for the price range you want for all car brands in autotrader, alot of options to choose from. Good luck.

I'm asking about how the RX8 does on long drives as far as being tiring to drive, not reliability.

Oh, then you'd better ask that in some RX-8 forum, coming from rx-8 owners is better than coming from 17 year old nerds from here lol .. although rx-8 owners are probably prejudice to the car, but you can get honest answers. ;)

Hey... I'd rather be called a 22 yr old engineer.... or nerd... whatever.

As for the RX-8 being a GT car. From the time I have spent in one, I can't see the seats in that car being nice to be in for hours at a time.

for highway driving... I don't think the high revving RX-8 is going to be very nice to drive, this means most of the time you overtake, you'll have to shift dwon a gear or 2. Not sure about comfort though, never been in one

As andy said, it's a very high revving engine. It's only got about 125lb/ft of torque which is peanuts if you compare it to things like a 350Z or TT that'll have over 200. There's plenty of space in it though and it's suicide doors are pretty practical. Best thing to do is test drive it!

Oh....and I'm a 21 yr old engineer, not a 17 yr old nerd :p

Been in one, thinking of getting one. The engine revs smoothly and it seems to rev to 9.5k without difficulty. As far is comfort I think its pretty comfortable. I love the driving position.

Read that they drink oil and given that they're all driven by women who never check the oil I reckon there will be a lot of ill RX-8's out there.

Hi revving engines are annoying on the motorway as the sound is itoo intrusive.

Gube, I mean this when I say this:

that was possibly the single most useless, subjective, ill-informed, and downright stupid post I've ever read on the entire intraweb in my life time.

from my research into buying a rotary the reason they drink oil is because the engien sprays oil into the intake charge to lube the apex seals. however it's shouldn't only be a small amount. as for sick RX-8s the biggest worry i would have is that they used synthetic oil instead of natural oil because synthetic (unless specifically designed) doesn't burn away like natural oil and builds up gunk in the rotor housing

any engine noice at the same rev point just humming there is intrusive.. thats why we have things called CD players that mask this humming noise then you can turn off the music/audiobook when you get to the twistie bits

^ Ouch!!

Anyway, before people diss high-revving motors, try and drive one first. There's nothing wrong with one that can twist up to 9000, but if you're looking for a GT car, you want to make sure that at highway speeds, you are comfortable with the RPM and noise level. My car, for instance, isn't GT oriented. At 130km/h I'm revving at 4,300 or so. I don't mind, but others wouldn't like it.

I'm really sick of all the "it's high-revving, it sucks" comments - redline says nothing about the highway manners. And Andy, what's the fun in smoking past someone without downshifting?? It's not as if you have to downshift just to pull out and pass  Come on, my car has measly torque, and it's fine.

Sometimes I think people around here have watched too much TG/FG, and are too obsessed with numbers. Get a grip with reality, folks - you don't need 300rwhp and 250lb-ft of torque to make a car move..

I think some people here don't quite get the idea behind a GT. :(

GT = a sports car that you wouldn't mind spending six hours in.

So what if you wind the engine up to pass someone, if you overtake in a freakin' DB9 you downshift.

I just want to know if anybody has take one on a long journey and could share any opinions on the comfort of a long haul in it.
:bangin:

300 is a lot of power, 250 is not a lot of torque. Come on, my car has 260 lb-ft. But my car will eat a lot of things so you really don't need that much, but it sure is fun. :D

Working the clutch can get tiresome after a while. Sure you can downshift in a DB9, but you it's hardly necessary. Where as a RX-8 will probably require it.

I do road trips in mine all the time. I drove from the WI to california and back when I first got it and I go to school in DC so I do that drive 4 or more times a year. (I've had it since July and I've done 26k miles).

I've found that it is fairly good. On long trips you can just stick it in 6th and forget about it. Or you can play the 4th-6th game and always have the exact right amount of power. The car is happy both ways.

The comfort is okay. I didn't get the GT package, just the touring so I don't have the seat that is adjustable in six ways. I think if I were to buy the car again, I'd go GT just for that reason alone. I also got the Nav and find it useful. It has a pretty extensive database of restaurants, motels and gas stations, all handy on road trips.

My big complaint with the RX-8 on road trips is the tank size/gas mileage. I tend to get about 300 miles to a tank (after filling up somewhere between 10-30 miles after the low gas light comes on). I wish it was more like 400-500.

Overall, I would give the RX-8 a 7/10 for road trip style driving.

What kind of gas mileage do you get when you leave it in 6th and cruise?

I tend to get around 22 mpg when I concentrate on gas mileage. Otherwise it varies from 16-20ish.

Atom heart mother thats poor!

No offense to you, I just didn't expect it to be in the same range as a Ferrari V-12 :p

I wonder how the 350Z does...

Thanks for the RX8 club link btw. :)
