how many MP do u need to havea DC = to a normal camera?

I've heard you would need around 36MP. the file size would be insane...

for 4R shots... i think you need 1600x1200 which is like about 2MP... you need 4MP at the max nowadays... unless you have to take really detailed pictures

Yeah the MP isn't really a quality rating like some people believe. The quality of the camera has more to do with the sensor and lens. The MP number is just the size at which the camera saves the pictures.

^^ Ridiculous...

It depends on how big you want it printed...

In Germany the standard is 13cm x 10cm... You will be able to make a good picture with 3-5 mp in this size...

If you want to have the exact same Information that you have on film on the chip... well, something around the 36 mp would be quite correct...

Buba

^ actually it's much more than that. film has more detail/data than than what's possible on any digicam. it doesnt matter though as most people wouldnt notice the diff side by side. only people with a trained eye will spot the diff these days.

Billion pixels... maybe theoreticly. Lenses will probably blur everything out before it reaches the film.

I remember reading some comparison between film and digi-cameras, and 5-7mpx gives you equal if not beter quality in real life. And these were proper mirror-lens cameras.

I good rule of thumb is this, I find:

3MP Good A5
5MP Perfect A5 / Good A4
7MP Perfect A4 / Good A3
10MP Perfect A3 / Good A2

You get the idea.

pretty much like it

you guys talking about print sizes and stuff, yes a 2.0MP is enough for a normal print, but we're talking something as good as a film camera...

no, cameras have wahy more than that, Canon consumers cameras go up to 16.7MP in the EOS-1Ds Mark II

My 10D is 6.3MP. The 20D is 8.2MP and Canon's highest end 1Ds is 16.7MP.

Renesis if you're just a layman (not working in the world of media like advertising, print, photography) then you'd probably be hard pressed to spot the diff. If you want better than 35mm film you should go medium or large format. I know the digital backs of of the medium format goes for $10-20,000.

 ... I got all the Canon SLR camera's model-lineup mixed up  , those numbers get so confusing

back in school we (well, my Materials & Processes of Photography prof) counted the grains of silver-halide on a single frame of T-Max 100 film.. roughly 36 million grains (each grain being capable of an infinite number of shades of gray)

here is a site that shows a few high res pictures. Saw this on the discovery channel a few days ago. Claiming equivalent to 1250 MP pictures. They were taking pictures of the space shuttle to the point you could see like the writing on the tiles .
