How much do Americans spend on Christmas?

I'm trying to write a paper about holidays, and I wanted to include the total amount that Americans as a whole spend on Christmas, but I can't seem to find the statistic for some reason. Anyone care to help me locate it?

I had found this one as well, but it doesn't give a solid figure, though it does say that e-commerce sales for the last part of 2004 was 21.5 billion and that represents 2.3% of total purchases, so I guess that mean that Americans spend over 2 trillion total? My math skills are getting lazy :D

We just had a news report here that had Quebecers being cheap at just under $500 CDN and moving up to just under $800 CDN for the Maritime provinces.

This is Canadian currency.
 
I'm lowering the average, it'll be the first year I'll spend money for christmas and it should be under $100
 
I think Americans are supposed to spend an average of $1,096 dollars. In others words, the average person will spend $1,096 dollars on gifts and stuff. Not positive on this stat, I saw the number this morning while watching the news.

I'm not buying anything this year as well. Only because I have no money whatsoever. :cry:

The value of U.S. imports of Christmas tree ornaments from China between January and August 2005. China was the leading country of origin for such items. Similarly, China was the leading foreign source of artificial Christmas trees shipped to the United States ($69 million worth) during the same period.

Atleast China is making a buck....or several million

How much of that do you think will actually go to the workers themselves?
 
very very little. A number of those "workers" are persecuted Christians that are forced to do it. The normal workers are paid jack. I think it all sucks.

Yeah, but then a lot of money is contabilized even if the money would be spent in any other time, outside christmas.

It's like when my father is trying to put some sense in my head and accounting what I spend on trips, forgetting that a part of that I would also spend at home...
 
After living in America all my life, I can tell you that people DUMP money into this holiday. The figures may be a little off, but there's no doubt that there is a ton of shopping goign on right now with Christmas presents on people's minds

Yeah, I fit that statistic, I've already bought my parents a laptop for christmas, since their old one died about a year out of warranty, and Sony wants too much to repair it outside of warranty. I've also already paid for my present for myself (Xbox 360), its just a matter of getting it, so right there i'm over $1600 for this one christmas, which admittedly is the most I have ever spent on christmas.
