DVD pixels are no squares.
As you may have noticed both 4:3 and 16:9 DVDs are 720x576 (720x480 for NTSC). The only thing that changes is the width of the rectangular pixels.
Calling a 16:9 PAL DVD 1024x576 is misleading because while it is displayed at 1024x576 on a computer screen (exactly 16:9) the width of 1024 is upsampled from the original 720 pixel width.
PALPlus isn't 1024x576 either, that has even less horizontal resolution than a regular old DVD (about 560 pixels).
