POWERR!!!
I got this new laptop, but the DVD drive is dead, so i need to take it out and send it back for a replacement (I don't want to send the entire computer back).

So how does one go about taking a DVD drive out of a laptop?

Cheers

Mine can be simply pulled out, you hold donw a button like thing on the bottom side of the laptop, and pull out the dvd drive.

Couple of things though. Be carefully, and check if there's any warranty sticker on it, usually you are not supposed to tear those apart. Another thing is that a lot of manufacturers will require the whole laptop to be sent back. So i'd give the shop/manufacturer a call, and ask them exactely what you are supposed to do. And in case they say ok, send us the just the drive, its best to ask them how to remove it in case it involves some complicated moves. :)

Unless it's a swappable drive, it won't be that easy. Just return it if it's new and get a new one. The only thing you can easily do to a laptop is add some RAM.

I told the store I just wanted to swap the drive so I think it's too late to send back the whole laptop (because the new drive is on the way).

It can't be that hard can it? :(

I'm pretty sure it's not something that can be done. It's not like a desktop PC where you pop them in and out.

Yeah, I tried to take my laptop apart a while back because the screen was wierd.
If you'r doing this it's going to take some time. First of all TAKE PICTURES so you know where everything goes (learned that the hard way  ) and then just start by removing everything that's in the way of the drive.

Seriously my DVD drive comes right out with one button at the bottom. Any pictures you can take of the bottom of the laptop?? There may be screws holding it in too.

I have a Toshiba 2450 and it just slides out with a button at the bottom.

You on the other hand have to take the top half off before you can get to the DVD player. That sucks because I saw the bottom view of that laptop and there is no way to get to the DVD player from the bottom. Kinda sucks but you gotta take the whole laptop apart which might void the warranty.

If everythings handeld via a store, and the new one is on the way, I really don't see the problem... Just let them do it!!

Stop repeating yourself Mischief! Those that just pop out are meant to be interchangeable with other stuff, it's not for ease of reparing. Most laptops aren't like that, eh?

^ I just explained myself on how my laptop works and what he needs to do.
