I want to build a new computer around the GTX 470

rather expensive that one, but it's one of the best you can get.
if you're ok with the price, go for it.
if you want to stay rather cheap i'd recommend getting your hands on a scythe mugen2 (rev b) [that's the one i have, i like it ^^] or the followup: scythe yasya [a friends got that, but it's got pushpins so i'm worried about his mobo].
those two are both comparably cheap and deliver a nearly similar performance (according to some tests that is).

big but from me: since you intend on putting a gtx470 in there, i don't think you will actually have problems with the noise of your boxed cooler. i do think the gtx470 should be louder most of the time (except while unzipping stuff maybe... things like that). of course your CPU will be grateful nonetheless because of comfier temps :p

That's a really good point that I completely forgot about. Maybe I'll just stick with the stock cooler for the time being and see how things go. :)

I'm gonna hold off on getting a HSF until after I build. That way I can see how much clearance I have over my RAM and if it's even worth it or not (based on temp and noise of stock HSF).

just want to throw this in here... in case anybody's interested :p quite a recent test of a few coolers for socket 1156:

quickly shows the freezer7 isn't quite as good...

note: acoustic efficiency: temperatures and noise-level in % of average, then set in relation to each other.

also: if you don't have RAM that's got an excessive heatspreader, i think you should be fine with any of those coolers. afaik both the scythe mugen2 and the yasya can have the fan on any side you want.
[yup, i don't think the xms3 will give you trouble. looks like a reasonably sized heatspreader there :) ]

Well damn. I just finished building this and my motherboard reports an error with my video card. I popped my old 8800 GT in and the computer works fine (using it to post this).

I guess I'm going to have to RMA it... :(

^ Thats a damn shame...

Concerning the heat sink: The Noctua is very good, but it only makes sense if you overclock and have very silent components all around. If one/both of those things isn't true for you, you are better off getting a scythe cooler for half the money... Personally I have an EKL Brocken (which is german and I wanted to be patriotic. Performance wise its a tiny bit under the Mugen RevB but the cooler never runs @more than 25% which means its completly silent. If I stop all the other fans and then the CPU fan there is no audible differnce even with my head right next to it...)

GTA4 looks crazy on max settings: (note no AA due to lack of support and I didn't wanna force it on)

Dude, you still use the stock cooler? Get yourself something like this: http://www.quietpc.com/files/images/products/nhu12pe-large.jpg

I'm gonna hold off on getting a HSF until after I build. That way I can see how much clearance I have over my RAM and if it's even worth it or not (based on temp and noise of stock HSF).

This weekend I'm going to track down what's making noise and if I can get the noise down (not that it's even close to loud now) to where the CPU HSF is the loudest thing at idle, then I'll replace it. Or maybe I'll replace it anyway for temp purposes. I just wanted to wait and see first. The case I got provides easy access to the back of the motherboard where the CPU is mounted, so I don't have to remove the mobo to change the HSF. :)

A gtx 470 isn't loud in idle at all...
http://www.computerbase.de/artikel/...dia_geforce_gtx_470/19/#abschnitt_lautstaerke (german, but still readable... well, just had a look and you are german anyway)
10% less noise compared to a gtx275, is still a lot. Over 40db in IDLE is still a noise you?ll hear (how much depends on stuff like frequency etc). A good HSF manages to stay far under 40db under full throttle. The gtx470 uses one 80mm fan ... that?s never going to be silent, no matter how you define the word. It might be a bit more quiet than prev generation cards ... but it?s still not there yet if you ask me.
