The challenge from last night got me seriously thinking - what else is there besides the 3-series convertible?

Sticking with the rules - it must be under 2000 pounds (or let's say 3500 dollars), and it must have four seats (no Miatas this time).

To make it even more difficult, let's stick only to models available in Europe.

The only think I could think of so far is the Saab 900

The W124 Mercedes E-class was made in convertible form, but I expect those still retain their value pretty well. There was also an Audi Cabriolet based on the 80. Oh, almost forgot, the girlier-than-a-pink-pony-earring Volkswagen Cabrio.

This........is..........Esseeeeeeex!

Although this particular one is being advertised at ?2250 one could always haggle.

Anyway what's wrong with just buying two MX5's? :p

And didn't Clarkson say once that anyone sitting in the back of a four seater convertible automatically looks like Hitler?

Tom, please put some spoiler tags around that second one.

Just found this at ?1995...

media

2000 model.

Proof, as if it were required, that the challenge was a complete set up/farce/pointless/simply an excuse to cock about.

Wow...I didn't know you can get a C70 convertible for under 2000 pounds...that's really cheap.

Well it was your car that inspired me to look for one and I have to admit to being surprised myself. 113k miles and a full service history according to the ad. And they are throwing the dirt in for free! I never understand people who are selling dirty cars. One afternoon's work and you can polish hundreds of pounds into the value of a car. Did that years ago with HWFT's old Vauxhall Nova (Opel Corsa to the Euros). Valued at about ?800, a Sunday of elbow grease, sold it next day for ?1225!!!!

Might have made things more fun if Hammond had gone for a Saab and May the Lolvo, but since the display team section says to me they needed three identical cars and it was obviously all set up from the start..........

As I said in the episode thread I don't mind a bit of larking about but when they insult my intelligence and expect me to be that naive it does grate somewhat.

Yeah, I think they need new script writers. Hammond with a Saab would have been interesting, especially if in the middle of the test his serpentine belt "broke" and he had to replace it. (on these Saabs the serpentine belt is in the back of the engine)

Nothing like the reliability of a Triumph engine. :p

and massive amounts of Golfs, Astras, Meganes, Escorts, 308s ... between 2000 and 3000 ?, the search turned out more than 800 results ... certainly no shortage of choice in that market ... but not much interesting ... or RWD. A 3series BMW really is the best choice by far ...
