My other sister is finally going to need a computer of her own. Since the only games she really plays is WoW, The Sims 2, and stuff like that (i.e. nothing high end like my other sister plays), we've decided a laptop would be best.

I've been playing around on Dell and it seems for $800-850 builds the base model plus some minor upgrades (like a dual core processor, 2 GB of RAM, etc.)

However I'm not sure about the video processor. It seems to be I can choose either a 14.1" widescreen and a nVidia 8400 integrated OR a 15.1" widescreen and a "Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100". Anything better gets up into another price bracket.

Anyone know how this X3100 does in the real world? She's currently playing on a GeForce 4 and that's horrible. I'm looking for around performance of my old 6800 GT or maybe a 6600 GT (give or take). Basically something that won't play WoW at minimum settings and can play The Sims 2 well.

Found out that HP is cheaper than Dell plus she can get 7-10% off via student discount. That means she can get a 6700 with a 15.4" and a 8400 for less than the Dell.

She's bitching about the lack of colors, but oh well. :p

My other sister did that to her PS2 controller. Worst idea ever as when your hands get warm, the paint becomes a little tacky/sticky. Plus the texture is totally ruined.

According to notebook check:

The following benchmark values are average Frame rates that were achieved with strong CPUs and enough main memory. Some games may not be playable with low end specifications and a X3100 graphics card (like only 512 MB RAM or a slow Celeron M CPU).

F.E.A.R.: 640x480, min/min: 40 fps -> fully playable
Doom 3: 640x480, min: 8 fps -> not playable
Unreal Tournament 2003: 1024x768, high: 40 fps -> playable
Quake 3 Arena: 1024 x 768, high: 80 fps -> fully playable
Battlefield 2: 800x600, Low Quality: 28 fps -> playable
Company of Heroes: 800x600, Low Quality: 35 fps -> playable
Far Cry: 800x600, Low Quality; 30 fps -> playable
Half Life 2, Episode 1: 800x600, Low Quality: 35 fps -> playable
Half Life 2, Lost Coast: 800x600, Low Quality: 18 fps -> not playable
Supreme Commander: 1024x768: 10 fps -> not playable
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion: 800x600: 30 fps -> playable

World of Warcraft had never been under 100 fps for me on the 8600 GT with widescreen and full everything. It's not a very gfx intensive game as you already know (although I had given it up because it was ridiculously boring). If this card can handle FC at 800x600 and churn out 30 fps I would assume it could play WoW at full res at around the same framerate. You may have to turn down some details but all should be well.

I wasn't sure which one the other card was you were referring to. Is it the Nvidia GeForce 8400M GT or the 8400M GS or the 8400M G?

In any case, the G scored a 1684 on 3Dmark05, the GS scored 2637, and the GT scored 3587. In comparison, the intel scored 822.

"256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS - For Core 2 Duo Processors "

Go with the 8400 then, if you can.

Thing is, the 8400 is slightly worse than the 6800 GT, and better than the 6600 GT. The Intel (according to the 3dmax data) is 3 times worse than the 8400. Its your money, and so its your call.

But I have to ask: Why not just get her a cheap desktop with an 8800 GT?

Hey money and yes, then it's definitely worth it. Thanks. :)

Because she needs to be mobile with it.

I have a laptop at 1.7 ghz and a an intel 85852/55 its only 64mb internal and I played wow for the two week free demo and it ran just fine albeit on low settings.
