On pistonheads forums, someone from fg asked has anyone achieved 200mph for under 50k lol

I work for Fifth Gear.
One of our current projects is to attempt 200mph in a modified Esprit.
Has anyone out there achieved a genuine 200mph in a car that cost them under ?50k, or knows someone that has?
If so we'd like to hear from you.

They are finding it more difficult than they thought it would be.

Or they can be looking for someone to show their car on TV, and talk about their story...

I'm seeing some of them having to give up on some of their cachet to reach 200mph. That, or a fake GPS...

They couls NOS it as a last attempt...

My guess is that they blew *another* (3rd) gear box and now are left wondering if it is even feasable.

I like the logic of one engineer: it's not the power, but the lack of drag and proper gearing.

I would talk to ZF about a new tranny, dog-eared and possibly computer clutched.

It would not be a road-fun car methinks ...

People running around with their 1000hp supras must be able to hit 200mph. I cant imagine it would cost more than ?50k to make one of those...

getting it to 1000hp is not as easy as you think, you don't just strap big turbos, 2 big-NOS cans and an exhaust thats bigger than your head... I'm sure if you ask jasonchiu how much his dad spend to get his skyline to 550hp or the other australian with the R32, plus you should know 50k includes the car as well I believe

how much does a jet engine cost? just strap one of on the back and away u go :)

another idea is to drop the car out of a plane and let gravity do its work :D

Jet turbines are somewhere in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, so I would doubt they could get one in their budget of about $60k (adjusted to the USD)

hahaha rename to reverse gear, 1st time i heard that one.

i bet they can afford it. should have just bought a supra or 300zx to do the job.

They should offer the car in their give-away contest with some silly question after (if) the manage to break 200mph. They will get a lot of calls and it would fund the project :)

There's one jet turbine (used) in my university's mechanics department. Such a waste. Nobody studies it... It's just lying down there in a compartment.

Can't you just plug in a pentium chip and hold down ctrl+alt+delete in one of those funky doo-dad skylines with all the japanese gagdets and voila - instant 20,000 bhp or something?

they shouldnt have chosen an espirit to begin with.. they should have chosen something asian at least.. would have been cheaper and more reliable

A Haybusa and some NOS would do the trick for less than 20k. :p

True.

But then you have to buy an outfit to match your bike and then there's the medical insurance when you fall off.

 :p

A hayabusa with a Turbo will get the front wheel up at 200mph.

Just watch Ghostrider Goes Wild and he shows it to you.
