Interesting topic on FG's attempt at 200MPH

Anything past around 800whp seems to be the point where you're becoming a pioneer. And you know what they say about pioneers... they often end up with arrows stuck in their butts.
The reason a Supra was suggested is it has reputately the toughest engine ever put in a japanese car. People make rather insane amounts of power on the stock bottom end. Admitted you don't need 1000hp for 200 mph, but it'll sure get you there quick.

I think the V8 esprits a wicked car, my dads mate had a racing one that did over 200mph. The problem was always the gearbox, it's made by renault (split cough...)
I agree, it's a cool car, but they know the gearbox is a problem. They broke the first one before they even modified it. Why didn't they spend the money to sure it up so it wouldn't be a problem.

And anyway, are they tallying the cost of the two gearboxes they have fried already? I could hardly think those are cheap... oh wait they're made by renault, never mind. :bangin: and on top of that they need a place with sufficent runoff to reach 200, the runway in the driving club episode wasnt long enough?

They might go to Millbrook ( www.millbrook.co.uk ), or any other speed ring.

Id say Dump the Esprit and pick up a R33 or R34.
There are quite afew 1000hp Skylines running around in street trim.
I also recall one of them having 1100bhp and one with 1300AWHP!!!!
The ATTESA system i'd say can handle power on par or even BETTER than the supras drivetrain can.

And dare i say a Skyline's slightly more classier than a supra??? ;)

I like the link to the 27 liter Rover...

650 hp though? Nice, but from 27 liters? 24 hp per liter?

Evo owners must be getting a laugh out of that...

I'd hate to see the MPG.

Ah I know the one your talking about. Built by John Dodd I think, maybe only 600bhp (they went up to about 1500bhp I think)

But the torque of the motor could actually bend the chassis and make the body pop off!!!! Now thats power!!

found a modern project drag using a merlin engine

nice

haha We have one of those engines sitting in our thermodynamics lab at uni. Its been all sectioned to show the internals working when you spin the prop.

200mph

200mph

200 mph is as much of a weight reduction and drag issue as it is a hp and torque issue. Getting 1000 HP isn't cheap, I beleive that the guy from Ex Vi Termini dumped 500,000 into his r33 GTR and it's pushing 1300 hp. You could probably break 200mph with 700-800 hp and the right engineering but that becomes expensive.

Right, so if it more a question of the balance of power and aero and weight... why the Esprit? It has no advantages in any of the three mentioned categories.

No easy potential for gutwrenching power... meh aero... and typical car weight = setting yourself up for failure?

This isn't exactly a ZO6 Vette were taking about with decent aero and power potential nor an MR2 with an ultralight package.

I wonder if the Esprit's bottom end can handle a shot of nitrous? It is the cheapest way to make power and I can see them resorting to that to get the power neccessary.

200mph for ?50k.... Easy.

?35-40k on an Audi RS6/E55 AMG. Remove limiter. Job done.

Spend the rest on beer. (ok maybe a superchip too just to make sure)

Well for all those who said nitrous I think you don't quite get the point, they wanted something that will do 200mph on its own, if you need an extra fuel source, then it isn't on its own, and I think the reason they didn't go for a supra or a skyline is cause they didn't want the whole ricer thing.

I think the reason they didn't go for some of the cars suggested is because although they set a budget of 50k, they still wanted to do it cheaper if they could.

The thing is. Why the hell would you make it easy for yourself. The segement would be 1 minute of explaining what you did to the car then 2 seconds more as it flies past the camera as a blur and then tiff comes on and say... there you go.. now here's Tom.

^Exactly they don't wanna make it easy, because then they wouldn't have anything to show on the TV. And as mr diss says, it really IS very easy/cheap to get a 200 mph car. If you wanna do it even cheaper, why not buy an E39 M5, strap a big turbo on it, and whoop ti doo - 200 mph. It's not about reliability anyway, since they are using an old Lotus :D

BTW Leppy - I'm getting crazy because of your avatar! I can't stop staring at it!!! It's so weird! :D

A hayabusa with a Turbo will get the front wheel up at 200mph.

Just watch Ghostrider Goes Wild and he shows it to you.

true but as they say... if you can't build a fast car, buy a bike.

I think some people here still don't understand how hard it is to get 200MPH... it's not as simple as "get 1000HP and you'll get there" it's more about aerodynamics and gearing. believe it or not most 1000 HP won't do 200mph

Well then geeeeeeeees get 2000 hp and get there then... gosh do I have to explain everything... better make it 4000 hp just to be safe.

 Even on this?

maybe 50000hp.... or you know what.... bugger it... put it in a Galaxy Super transporter and have it fly at over 200 mph.... Do I have to think of everything geeeees :p

yeah, plus you could fit a jet engine in that, I'd be seriously impressed if they managed to do THAT for under 50k tho!

i agree, i'm getting dislectic from all those flashing avatars
no problems with moving ones, but the flashing ones are pushing it

Flashing as in bright colours changing rapidly or flashing as in... umm... well just watch my avatar. :p

so, uh, have they hit 200 yet, I havent' been watching.
