Effective Immediately, the ip range 117.0.0.0-117.255.255.255 is now BLOCKED.

Following countries affected:
China, Thailand, Pakistan, Vietnam.

A few other countries may be affected (Dialup providers in Australia use a few small blocks in that range, but none of the current members use them)- so if your ISP is included, please let us know so we can add an exclusion to the block.

And how would they do that if they're blocked? :p

Does this mean that most spambots use IPs based in Asia? Or are there other reasons for this measure to come into effect?

Hackers mainly I believe. Trying to hack the site.

Whew... Asian-based hackers sure do a lot of damage recently. One of my favorite websites ( http://www.f1rejects.com ) was attacked and deleted by an Indian hacker last week. Let's hope it's back online in the following days.
Quiky is keeping them all out, but he's tried of them being in the access log.

I long ago started nullrouting those types of ranges with almost no collateral damage. Just not worth the hassle.

Steve

I did an IP lookup and about 5 legit members will be blocked, no regulars minus one with a bunch of negative rep (i.e. won't be missed).

Looks like this IP range can safely be blocked.

He's our IRC bot with a fake hostmask. ;)

Does this explain why I can't access FG on random occasions?

Well, I'm in Asia... :/

Ah, Chinese hacker(s) trying to crash the server.
what joy could anyone possible get from doing that? doesn't these miserable assholes have anything better to do than destroy things that bring so many people pleasure?!?!

imo hackers, environmentalists and anti-globalizationists should all be sent to Siberian labor camps! :censored:

That means I can't visit FG when I'm going to visit my grandfather in January :(.

I would have no clue as to what exception would need to be made lol

Not all Asians are bad ;) (Like me for instance)
Whats the problem with these hackers? Why cant they leave us in peace!

Er Conspiracy theory: Has not some text been posted in some of the forums about Tibet and the Qui Gon whatsit? So, could this be state sponsored hacking? Probably not as they would just block us for Chinese users but perhaps they use it as a training exercise for trainee Internet State Security.

Does China include Hong Kong as well or just mainland China?

We blocked just that IP range, not countries. He was just listing the countries that those IP ranges are used in.

If you're in China but not using a 117.xxx.xxx.xxx IP address, you'll be able to connect just fine.
