Elon Musk Is a National Security Risk

Musk’s now-deleted post questioning why no one has attempted to assassinate Joe Biden and Kamala Harris renews concerns over his work for the US government—and potential to inspire extremist violence.

I understand a lot of the animosity towards Elon but his actions with SpaceX makes it difficult for me to cast stones in his direction. Being able to land and reuse rockets is a massive improvement over being beholdant to companies like United Launch Alliance and Arianespace. Those companies are owned by large military industrial contractors and as a result they are often given free reign over launch contract prices due to an effective monopoly, as well as having an even more exhaustive history of underhanded political tactics and shady backroom deals. SpaceX shook up the legacy space launch contractor dinosaur industry by being able to effectively scale reliable, reusable rockets that dramatically reduce to the cost to orbit. I fault Elon for much of his handling of Tesla and his work at Nueralink gives me a lot of pause but I don't think he gets enough credit for his work at SpaceX. As an aside I'd like to add that Gwynne Shotwell is in charge of most of SpaceX's day to day operations and is very much a levelheaded pragmatist to Elon's eccentric visionary character.

why? that's arguably as much of a success story as spaceX is - at least up until the point the bloody man child musk decided he needed the complete lunacy and commercial dumpster fire that is the cyber truck...
to this day, the model 3 and model Y are, in my view, quite far ahead of their direct competition - price wise that is. there is nothing even remotely comparable in the 3 / Y base model price bracket that comes close in terms of range and especially equipment.

that is the whole thing... the guy was a marketing / communications genius (very much crumbling, but there are quite a few weirdos who seem to worship him like a messiah). somehow, the notion is still very much embedded in peoples heads that Tesla and space X and what have you somehow were products of his genius or something. like in the case of space X, the only genius was finding the right people to actually run those companies imo - as is evident from a bunch of articles and anonymous interviews. management at his companies very much depends on being able to answer completely insane questions from the idiot all the while keeping the actual day to day work as secret as possible from him. if they managed to achieve his insane targets, that just helps in the latter.

that honestly just doesn't make sense to me. just because the guy started a company and managed to get arguably very good people that thrived outside their former ultra-corporate worlds, that did indeed result in quite revolutionary advancements in aerospace, doesn't mean he can't be a complete cuckoo. what has the former to do with the latter? and honestly, with his companies nobody actually knows how much he is involved in anything, except letting the right people off the leash or putting into the right positions (which he's very good / lucky at, I'll agree), but with the latter? he's proven time and time again that he's completely off the deep end and holds extremely racist and antisemitic views.

Like I said previously, before SpaceX and Elon Musk there was an effective monopoly on space transportation held by companies like Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and Northrop Grumman. These companies operate shady cabals who aren't above using nefarious tactics to silence whistleblowers, engage in shady backroom deals with politicans, and have a history of profiting from morally dubious operations undetaken by the government. It's hard for me to share in the animosity towards things that Elon may or may not have said when his competition has a proven track record of actually engaging in evil and nefarious actions oftentimes sanctioned by the US government itself. I would also argue his extreme pragmatism has wide ranging benefits for national security, creating jobs, and generally increasing the collective knowledge and quality of the aerospace industry at large. These points have garnered him a lot of good will in my book because his competition utilizes an extensive playbook underhanded tactics to get their way and their track record has significantly more harm done than things Elon has said on twitter. Also, if there are any specific instances of Elon expressing racist or anti-semitic views I wouldn't mind being pointed in that direction because I haven't been able to verify them myself outside of dubious tabloid headlines.

Also to address your point about Tesla, I jumped the gun on my argument. I was still under the impression that Teslas are expensive poorly made cars but after looking at their website prices are much more reasonable than I was expecting and it seems like they've figured out their manufacturing issues. FSD continues to improve as well even though I have some reservations about that.

that's all well and good, but that doesn't somehow make musk any less of lunatic. they're two completely separate issues.

erm...
things Elon has said on twitter
there you go...

that's actually the only part I'd consider a borderline scam, at this point. they've even revised their own advertising of the feature to not even include potential driverless operation anymore...

Do I really have to point out that this could be refering to both Musk and his "competition"?

There's an entire website dedicated to it, called "Twitter". It also tried to go by the name "X", but nobody calls it that.

Just look at the rest of this thread, the 'I don't like Tesla' thread and maybe search "Elon Musk horse"
