there are a few things in mind i want to do soon to my "tech"

i want to upgrade the ram in my laptop from 512 to 1G but its gonna cost me around $640 HKD, i'm wondering if it is worth it IYO

also i have a old HD which is 8GB and its a IBM one. i am planing to make it a portable HD coz its worthless on the market and 8GB isnt bad. all i need is the IBE USB Cable which i can get for less tna 60HKD. but the quesiton is do they make a portable case for it. if not i aint bothered to do that.

I've just upgraded the RAM in my desktop from 512MB to 1GB (though I replaced the 512MB stick I had with a pair of MUCH faster 512s). It's definatly worth the upgrade, even if you get the same speed RAM. Windows loves RAM...

As for the case, well you just need a caddy. I've had a couple of desktop and a single laptop hard drive all of which I've put in external USB caddies (boxes, cases... whatever you wanna call them). I bought the caddies cheap off ebay (brand new) and they included the USB - IDE interface and USB cable.

What is your processor in the laptop?
 
Before I came to Finland, I bought myself a external case for a internal HD. I believe it's called Icy Box. It has firewire and USB2.0 connection (all cables included)
 
jason, you can buy USB cases for full-size HD's... I never thought of it... I have 3 40GB's lying around, I guess its no harm doing that
 
changing to more RAM is always a good idea. I have absolutely no idea how much 640 HKD is, so you have to see for yourself if maybe just buying a new laptop wouldn't be a better idea :)...

A couple of years ago, I changed my 64mb ram to 192mb (Pentium II, 350) and gave that computer to my mother. It can do WinXP with no effort, altough it's so old (the PC of course, not my mother)
 
Jason, I would change the disk, don't bother with the memory yet. A faster, larger harddisk will help a lot - and in addition you'd get a fresh OS install which wil make it faster (at least for a while).

In my work, I use a laptop all the time, it's got 512MB memory and I've never really had the need to add more memory, even though I need to run a lot of demo web servers, print services, and so on - in addition to working in Adobe Illustrator.

However, there is a huge difference between 256MB and 512MB, because Windows (XP) will very soon reach that 256 limit... but if your system is not messed up, you will seldom pass the 512 limit (just watch a resource monitor) for regular use, so the 512 to 1024 will help you only on few occasion. Obviously, when you do need the extra memory, it's great though ;)

And I do have a desktop with 1GB memory, so I know what it's like - just for reference. It's just not that different from the old desktop, except it's a faster CPU/MB.
 
i have 1.25GB of ram on this desktop but i doubt i ever use it all lol.

on my laptop there is 512mb alredy but seeing all the parts are so cheap i want to get it up to 1GB coz i use corel draw alot for my design lessons and some stuff like prodesktop which lags if i drag too many objects
 
If you can afford it, I would do it. The reason I asked about your processor is because if you have a really slow one in there than it wouldn't really help.
